Large community parks are the most used in the Manhattan and Riley County area according to consultants giving the briefing on a recent “statistically valid” survey. Consultants are currently giving numbers from the survey at the joint Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Manhattan city commission work session in city hall.  Indoor training facilities top the list for needed programs, and a combination of sales and property taxes is the number one option for funding parks and recreations projects according to the consultants.  Consultants say more community input will be taking place, and full analysis continues on the data.  This…

After an alleged attempted robbery back in November, a Manhattan man is facing three felony level charges. Christopher Hudgins appeared in Riley County District Court on Tuesday afternoon for his preliminary hearing. Hudgins is charged with attempted aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, and contributing to a child’s misconduct. These charges stem from a home invasion case that took place in the 2300 block of Cheryl Terrace.  When originally reported, it was believed Hudgins was just a victim-as he suffered a gunshot wound to the face.  It was later discovered he was a suspect instead. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release Tuesday afternoon regarding a theft that was reported on Monday. Law enforcement responded to the area of Roepke Road and Excel Road, in rural Manhattan, for a reported theft of an enclosed trailer from a job site.  Construction crews discovered that sometime between Friday, March 20th to Monday, unknown individuals had taken a white 12 foot single axle enclosed trailer with rear and side doors. Breaking News: Germanwings Airbus A320 airliner has crashed in the French Alps between Barcelonnette and Digne, French aviation officials and police have said. The jet belongs to the German low-cost airline Germanwings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa. The plane had reportedly been en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and was carrying 142 passengers and six crew. Both Airbus and Germanwings have said they aware of the reports but cannot yet confirm them.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A new proposal for controlling the cost of mental health drugs to the Medicaid program in Kansas has advanced in the Legislature. The Senate gave first-round approval Monday to a bill requiring a review of Medicaid’s mental health prescriptions. It also creates an advisory committee to draft guidelines on prescriptions for the needy and disabled covered by the program. Senators expected to take final action Tuesday. The measure had bipartisan support and arose from discussions between Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration and mental health advocates. Previous Riley County Commission meetings have featured discussions about the possibility of dissolving the Eureka Valley drainage district, after it was recommended by County Counselor, Clancy Holeman.
