Known as “The Jet Award,” the honor was established in 2011 to recognize the best return specialist in NCAA Division I. The award is named in honor of Johnny Rodgers, a wide receiver and return specialist for the University of Nebraska who won the Heisman Trophy in 1972 and is a member of the National College Football hall of Fame. Unemployment numbers are down in the Manhattan area, according to figures just released by the Kansas Department of Labor. The Manhattan metro area which includes Riley and Pottawatomie Counties is listed as 3.5%, down from 3.9 the month before and last year’s numbers of 4.4. The Manhattan metro numbers with Junction City show 4.1% in February, also down from the month before and last year. The city of Manhattan with just Riley County has a 3.1% number, with Junction City’s at 5.9% in February of this year. Pottawatomie County Law Enforcement and emergency officials responded to a public injury construction-type accident shortly before 11 a.m. Friday morning. Few details are available, but the accident was reported just east of Manhattan on Excel and Roepke Roads. County UnderSheriff Shane Jager tells KMAN the 911 call came in at 10:45. Jager adds an unidentified individual was injured and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Riley County Police arrested a Solomon woman on two no bond probation violation arrest warrants. Jennifer Larson, 40, was taken into custody at the Riley County Law Enforcement Center on Seth Child Road on the warrants, issued by the Ellsworth County District Court. The two probation violation warrants stem from a theft conviction in 2014.
It was a busy day in Pottawatomie County Court, with a plea entered by a Marysville man who drove his vehicle into two Manhattan businesses including Staples last December. Judge Jeff Elder found Jason Butler, 36, guilty of the charge he entered the plea to, which was driving under the influence. The seven other charges in the case were dismissed. Pottawatomie County Attorney Schuck recounted the incident Butler was involved in, with extensive damage to two businesses near Tuttle Creek Boulevard, including Staples and Short Go.
