A jury trial was held for Howard Barrett in November, and after several Larned State Hospital mental examinations, he was finally sentenced on Wednesday afternoon in Riley County District Court. Barrett was convicted in connection with the stabbing incident that occurred on February 14th in 2008, where Thomas James (48), of Clay Center, was found deceased by an apparent stab wound.  Reports indicate James was in Barrett’s apartment for pest control work. The Wamego City Airport is looking very good these days according to Airport Chairman John Hupe, who reported to Wamego City Commissioners the new runway with all the markings made the Airport look better than ever. He added the City crew took over all the mowing at the Airport, which added to the look. On the business side, Hupe said all the existing hangars are full, and there’s a plan to build two T-hangars, because there are more people wanting hangar space than is available. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A House committee authorized issuing up to $60 million in bonds to renovate Kansas State University’s College of Architecture. The project approved Tuesday is the only capital improvement project sought by six state universities to be funded in the House budget proposal. Rep. Mark Hutton of Wichita says he made the motion to include the project in the budget because Kansas State waited for years while major projects were funded at other universities. The bonds would be issued in fiscal year 2016, with the first $3.7 million payment in 2017 coming from the state Educational Building Fund.

At a special meeting of the USD 378 board of education held on Monday night, the board voted to offer an interim superintendent position to Nancy Meyer.  Contingent upon contract approval, Meyer will begin her duties in mid-April and will serve through June 2016. Meyer has a Liberal Arts Degree from Highland Community College and a bachelors degree in education from Emporia State University.
