The Manhattan high boys basketball teams’ dream season came to a bitter close on Wednesday night as the 7th seeded Junior Blues of Washburn Rural upset the 2nd seeded Indians 59-58 in a class 6A Sub State Semi Final. The Manhattan Ogden USD 383 school board is one step closer to possibly conducting a mail ballot election to increase their location option budget authority by 3%. The board currently has an LOB of 30%. Other Kansas school districts have explored this option this year, including USD 384 Blue Valley Randolph, to increase their revenue. A few concerns were raised by board members during the discussion at Wednesday night’s board meeting. The Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation was the recipient of $750,000 Wednesday morning. The gift was presented by Bob Krause and Marty Vanier, who have a long history of philanthropy in supporting Kansas State University and the Flint Hills region. While Krause is a native of Chicago, Illinois, Vanier is a Kansas native. Both commented on the center’s immersive experience theater. The Wamego City Commission heard several annual reports. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced Recreation Commission Director Kristin Jones and Advisory Board Chair Joe Steele. Jones reported that 2014 was a good year, and went over the attendance numbers for the different programs. According to Jones, the programs offered by Wamego’s Recreation Department encompass all age groups, and were well attended. Housing Authority Property Manager, Joni Chrest reported 100 percent occupancy, with 11 on the waiting list.
