The Manhattan High girls and boys basketball teams each took a step closer to a Centennial League crown on Tuesday night at the MHS gym with a clean sweep of the Trojans. It was a wire to wire win for the MHS girls as they roll to a 51-31 victory. Manhattan (14-3, 8-2) was led by Caroline Ballard who dropped in a game high 19 points. No it’s not an Orwellian invasion, but there are several new U.S. Cellular stealth antennas approved for installation near the top of the Bluemont Hotel. Installation required the Manhattan city commission to amend the development plan in the area to accommodate the new fixtures during Tuesday’s commission meeting in city hall. According to city staff the antennas would bolster service within the Aggieville and Kansas State University main campus. Installation of another portion of the system is expected to be put in just north of the hotel, and requires power cabling under the alleyway at that location. The antennas would…
On Tuesday, Detectives of the Junction City/Geary County Drug Operations Group (DOG) arrested Arthur M. Van Tassel based on tips received from the public. Mr. Van Tassel was profiled by the JCPD on Friday and several tips came in from sources advising possible locations for the Fugitive. At around 5:30 p.m. hours Tuesday, he was arrested without incident and will be held at the Geary County Jail on Parole Violation charges.

While Riley County Law Board members were agreeable on most matters Tuesday, a final item drew some heated remarks from two of the members. Board Chair Robert Boyd criticized fellow Board Member Wynn Butler for asking the group’s Executive Secretary to add a couple of items to the agenda. The items requested by Butler via email involved the time of the meetings and a small presentation regarding the law board’s composition. A preliminary hearing was held Tuesday afternoon for a Manhattan man facing several felony level drug charges. Joshua Cross was arrested back in October of last year for over a dozen drug charges after the Riley County Police Department conducted an investigation in the 1400 block of Legore Lane. Cross’s attorney, Britian Stites, informed Judge William Malcolm that a plea agreement had been reached, outlining just the felony level drug counts. Cross chose to waive his preliminary hearing for the eight felony level charges. His arraignment was set for March 2nd at 2:30 p.m. in Judge Meryl Wilson’s courtroom.
The Manhattan man who pleaded guilty recently to an aggravated assault charge, involving a June incident, appeared in Riley County District Court Tuesday morning. Kevin Flynn, who is a medic in the Army, appeared in Judge David Stutzman’s courtroom wearing his dress blues, alongside his attorney-Barry Clark. Prosecuting State Attorney, Bethany Fields requested Flynn be sentenced to 11 months with the department of corrections, probation after, and paying $220 in costs and restitution.
