Wamego football coach Dale Burkholder is stepping down after a four year run that included the school’s first playoff appearance since 2007. “Telling some of my kids yesterday was the toughest thing I’ve ever done,” Burkholder said. “I love those kids.” The 65-year-old Burkholder, who has a wife that recently retired, cited spending more time with his grandchildren as the primary reason for his departure. U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan made a couple quick stops at area businesses Monday, prior to his return to Washington D.C. Florence Manufacturing and Ultra-ICE in Manhattan had a visit Moran was impressed with what he saw–with ICE seeing some changes recently, with UIltra showing the acquisition by a British company of part of the facility. ICE specializes in the design, manufacturing, qualifications, and testing of aerospace electronics. Senator Moran says things are definitely different this session, with nine new Republican Senators, the largest increase by either party since 1980. Riley County’s USD 378 Superintendent Brad Starnes is resigning. In a letter to Board members Monday,Starnes  says  he reached the decision “after thoughtful and prayerful consideration.” The resignation would take effect at the end of his present contract June 30th of this year. Starnes goes on to say that since 2000 he has had the pleasure of serving in what he considers the state’s greatest school district, adding his passion for Riley County runs deep. The Ogden man who entered a plea last month in connection with a robbery case appeared in Riley County District Court Monday morning for his sentencing. Timothy Holmes appeared in Judge David Stutzman’s courtroom.  The plea Holmes entered in early December involved two charges-aggravated robbery and intimidation of a victim. Judge Stutzman sentenced Holmes to 60 months, or five years, with the Kansas Department of Corrections.
