Conflicting opinions were expressed during Riley County Health Department Director, Brenda Nickel’s request to close the department for a few days next year. In her presentation to the county commission, during their Monday meeting, Nickel stated this would allow her department to have time for professional development.  She requested this for five different afternoons throughout the year, all of which would be on Thursdays. Since the department has recently changed their clinic hours of operation, this has added over 100 additional hours of operation every year.  So even by having the department closed on these five occasions, Nickel said they…

Kaywaun Washington, Rasheem Wilson, and Ortegas Tune were in Riley County court on Monday afternoon in connection with charges associated with an alleged incident that occurred in Manhattan involving firearms, kidnapping, and a burglary of a local Manhattan man’s residence. According to police reports in October the trio were involved in an incident that included kidnapping two Manhattan women at gunpoint, and using them as bait to kidnap and rob a Manhattan man.  All three will be tried separately in Riley County court. Sales tax numbers for the city of Manhattan show a 2.3 percent increase for yearly numbers, but are down slightly for the December tax reports. City Finance Director Bernie Hayen  says retail sales “remained strong,” although he says there were no particular variations or notable declines to report. The December numbers were $863,570, compared to $887,567 in December of 2013. The year-round totals though show about 10,723,686 compared to $10,484,185 last year. A reminder the December numbers generally reflect November.

A Junction City resident was arrested by the Riley County Police on Sunday afternoon for driving with a suspended license. 37-year-old Leslie Thomas was arrested at 2 p.m. for the previously mentioned charge, and for habitual violation of operating a vehicle unlawfully. Thomas’s bond is set at $5,000. A Manhattan man was arrested by Riley County police on December 26th for an outstanding warrant. in a recent report released by the police, 19-year-old Daeshawn Bryant was arrested at approximately 2 pm last Friday for a warrant from the US Marshal Service through the United States District Court.
