WalletHub recently released a list of the best and worst college cities and towns in America for 2014. Manhattan ranked 12th on the list. Two other Big 12 colleges ranked above K-State:  Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa ranked 11th and Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma ranked 8th. Lawrence ranked 44th on the list. The 280 U.S. cities and towns were ranked for their academic, social and economic atmospheres.  WalletHub did this by analyzing 23 different key metrics including- the quality of higher education, crime rates and the cost of living.

The Manhattan City Commission revisited its appointments to the Riley County Law Board, Tuesday. During the last legislative meeting Mayor, Wynn Butler announced his slate of recommendations which included local resident, Craig Beardsley. Butler believes Beardsley offers a strong list of  qualifications which would be an asset to the Law Board. Butler’s slate did not include Mayor Pro Tem , Karen McCulloh; and After expressing concern with a citizen serving on the board, the Commission rejected Butler’s slate and instead voted to fill all positions with elected officials. Manhattan high basketball stays perfect on Tuesday night at the MHS gym, sweeping the Great Bend Panthers. Led by 17 points from sophomore Gigi McAtee, the MHS girls ran its record to 3-0 with a strong second half effort to beat the Lady Panthers 72-57. Joining McAtee in double figures was seniors Savannah Roberts and Caroline Ballard with 14 and 10 points respectively. Nine players overall reach the scorers book for the Indians. Benji George is still perfect in his first season as the head coach for the MHS boys, the Indians runaway with a 61-45 win over the Panthers.…

A preliminary hearing was set for the Fort Riley soldier who was charged with murder in the first degree and abuse of a child, after a five week old suffered several injuries back in February. The affidavit released additional details about this case, and indicated emergency assistance was called for when the child was left alone with McConnell for just a few minutes.  The child was not breathing and was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center, where the child was then transferred to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. It’s been found! The G. Thomas Jewelers/Manhattan Running Company Jingle Bell Rock that is! Allison Teeter of Wamego and her brother Levi Teeter of Manhattan have been looking for the rock since they were children in Manhattan several years ago–and Allison finally found it early Tuesday afternoon. She found it on a new paved running path near Rocky Ford underneath a Christmas tree. Levi actually put it together–suggesting the new running trail off Barnes Road with lots of benches.  He just noticed the running trail this past Friday. Allison says she spends 30-45 minutes a day working on finding the rock.…
