A Manhattan couple intends to construct an event center, a winery, and a home for themselves, off of Wildcat Creek Road. Before this can be done, the Tegtmeier couple needed to explore rezoning the tract of land. This rezone request was made during Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting. The request was to rezone the tract of land from “AG” (agricultural district) to “A-PUD” (agri-business planned unit development). The St. Marys man charged with unintentional, but reckless, murder in the second degree after his jury trial last month, was sentenced Thursday in Pottawatomie County District Court. Pablo Gonzalez was found guilty on the murder charge, however was found not guilty of the aggravated assault charge stemming from the same evening. Gonzalez was charged with these counts, after a shooting incident that took place on New Year’s Day in St. Marys, where Levi Bishop (24) was found dead. KMAN received word that Rod Harms has been selected as the new Aggieville Business Association Executive Director. Harms is a K-State graduate who lives in Manhattan, and is active in the community. He has served on several local boards and committees, including the County/City Wildcat Creek Working Group, the Attractions Committee for the Flint Hills Discovery Center, and the Konza Rotary Club. Harms also ran for the District 3 Riley County Commission seat against current commissioner-Ron Wells in 2012. KMAN is still currently waiting on a statement from Harms.
September sales tax numbers were described as “somewhat of a mixed report”, according to Manhattan Finance Director, Bernie Hayen. Hayen released the statistics Thursday afternoon, and mentioned big box stores and automobile dealerships are down this month compared to September of last year. He did however report that grocery sales are up. $832,645 were collected in sales taxes for this month, which is down from last month’s figure of $894,136. The city had predicted that $843,578 would be collected this month, so there prediction was $10,993 too high, however it is $9,907 more than the budget.
The Department of Defense announced Thursday, they have identified the 1st Infantry Division as the headquarters unit to deploy as part of the upcoming transition of authority in Iraq. The deployment involves a division headquarters element to support the combatant commander’s mission requirements. About 500 soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division’s headquarters and headquarters battalion will deploy to the Central Command area of responsibility in late October. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) An online auction of sex toys that were seized by Kansas authorities in a tax delinquency case could boost the state’s revenues. State Revenue Department spokeswoman Jeanine Koranda said Wednesday the agency seized items in July from five adult stores operated by United Outlets LLC under the name Bang. Two were in Topeka and one each in Kansas City, Kansas; Junction City, and Wichita. They were seized for failure to pay sales, income and withholding taxes of $163,986.
