A 60-year-old Kansas Department of Corrections inmate convicted of second degree murder in Riley County in 1982 has been passed over for parole. Michael Long’s earliest possible release date is now listed as May first of 2017. He is being held at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, with a custody level listed as maximum. Long was part of the public comment session grouping of inmates for the month of March, with a parole hearing in April. He had also been passed over for parole two years ago. Unemployment numbers have been released by the Kansas Department of labor for April of 2014. When compared to 2013 numbers the Manhattan metro area which includes Geary, Pottawatomie, and Riley Counties reported a small reduction in unemployment equating to half of a percent at 4.1%. Breaking the numbers down further in comparison with last year we see Manhattan with a .3%reduction at 3.4%, Junction City saw a .4% reduction at 5.5%, Geary county saw a .5% reduction at 5.5%, Pottawatomie county saw a full 1% reduction at 3.8%, and Riley county was reported with a .6% reduction at 3.0% unemployment. 22-year-old Garret Olson waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Friday morning in Riley County court. Olson is charged with involuntary manslaughter after a fatal accident in October of 2013. Officials allege Olson was at fault in the accident which resulted in the death of his passenger Trevor Redding. Olson will appear on June 16th at 2:30 pm in Riley county court for his next hearing on the case. Olson’s defense attorney informed the court they were still awaiting results from a KBI lab test. Prosecutors confirmed the information saying they were awaiting results from a DNA blood swab.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Chiefs have signed third-round draft pick Phillip Gaines. The cornerback out of Rice became the third of the Chiefs’ six draft picks to sign their contracts when he agreed to a deal Thursday. Sixth-round picks Zach Fulton and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, both offensive lineman, had already signed their contracts. Terms of the contracts have not been disclosed. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Nelson Cruz homered and the first-place Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Cruz homered in the fourth after Chris Davis drew a walk to lead off the inning. It was Cruz’s 12th home run, which is second in the American League to the 15 of Chicago White Sox rookie Jose Abreu.
