TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A northeast Kansas trial judge will sit with the state Supreme Court in December to hear a case involving attorney discipline. District Judge Martin Asher, who serves Atchison and Leavenworth counties, was named Thursday to sit with six of the high court’s justices. Justice Marla Luckert recused herself from hearing the discipline case involving attorney Brendon Patrick Barker. Asher will only hear the one case on the docket and will participate in the court’s deliberations and drafting of the opinion regarding Barker.

The Riley County Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff s Office arrested a Manhattan man Thursday night for several drug related offenses while conducting an ongoing investigations into the illegal sale and distribution of drugs. Aaron Norris, 20, was arrested after a search warrant was served at his home in the 1000 block of Moro Street. Norris was taken into custody for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, no drug tax stamp, and possession of drug paraphernalia. A 45-year-old man serving time with the Kansas Department of Corrections on three Geary County convictions has apparently been passed over for parole. Ronald Smith was convicted and sentenced in May of 1990 in connection with 1989 cases of rape, aggravated burglary, and aggravated sodomy. Public comment sessions for Smith were held in September, with the parole hearing last month. But a check with the KDOC website indicates Smith’s next possible release date isn’t until October of 2029. He remains incarcerated in El Dorado.
