Wamego sisters, Kaylee and Lanie Page nearly added a second state championship to their resume in 2013, this time as a doubles team at the 4A state tennis meet in Topeka. The Pages led the Lady Raiders to a state basketball crown in March. Kaitlynn Pelger moved into fourth place in career kills at K-State in a straight sets win over Texas Tech on Saturday night, 25-19, 25-19, and 25-22. 3,100 fans saw the match on “Pack the House Night” at Ahearn Fieldhouse, as Pelger had 15 kills and now 1,408 at K-State, as she passed Yolanda Young (1,394) on the Wildcats’ all-time list. Wide receiver-tight end Chris Harper, a fourth-round draft choice coming off failed stints in Seattle and San Francisco, was claimed on waivers Friday by the Green Bay Packers. Running back Michael Hill was released to make room for Harper, who becomes either the Packers’ fifth wide receiver or their sixth tight end. Seattle cut Harper, the 123rd overall draft selection, on Aug. 31. DERBY, Kan. (AP) Crews have begun retrieving the wreckage of a small business jet that crashed in a Derby-area field, killing a nationally known pastor and the plane’s pilot. The crash Friday killed both pilot, Mitchell Morgan, and Ed Dufresne who led the World Harvest Church in Murrieta, Cailf. The Wichita Eagle reports hundreds of pieces of the Cessna Citation were strewn across fields outside Derby. Most of the wreckage is centered in a 15-by-20-foot wide and 6-foot-deep crater, where the plane caught fire. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The University of Kansas has given its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award to a four-star general who was also a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Charles Boyd received the award Friday at the Dole Institute of Politics. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Boyd spent nearly seven years as a POW in Vietnam, and later attended the University of Kansas to study Spanish.
