Updated 6 a.m Tuesday.: A fire at 702 South Juliette Avenue brought Manhattan firefighters out Monday evening. At 6:20 p.m. the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire. Upon arrival crews found a one story residential structure with heavy smoke and fire showing. Crews entered the structure and extinguished the flames, while other firefighters prevented the apartment building next door from catching fire. The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained within 30 minutes. Manhattan high school has announced that Benji George has been named the new head boys basketball coach for the Indians. George has been involved with the MHS basketball program since 2008. He began as the freshman assistant coach up until 2011 where he then took over the role as junior varsity coach up until the start of the 2013-2014 season. George has been a biology teacher at the MHS east campus since August of 2008. With the abundance of agricultural burning this past weekend, and the smoky haze that could be seen over Manhattan and surrounding areas, the Riley County Commission discussed air quality during their Monday meeting. Emergency Management Director, Pat Collins and Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, Jason Orr teamed up to provide background on controlled burnings and air quality. Emergency crews were called to Anderson Avenue west of Manhattan early Monday afternoon, to a report of a cement truck overturned just west of 62nd Avenue. According to Mat Droge, Public Information Officer for the Riley County Police Department, the driver was Lifestarred to a Topeka Hospital with serious injuries. The accident was reported at about 12:12 p.m., Traffic was blocked a short time later,with Riley County Police re-routing traffic at 60th and 69th Avenues.
