A fall from the third story of the Sigma Nu Fraternity house in the 500 block of Sunset Avenue sent an 18 year old to a Topeka hospital. Riley County Police Public Information Officer Mat Droge tells KMAN Sean McBride accidentally fell early Sunday morning. McBride was first transported to Mercy Regional Health center, then life-flighted to Stormont Vail in Topeka, where he is still receiving treatment.

More details were released Monday morning regarding a Saturday arrest involving Bomani Gordon, 19,  of Manhattan. Gordon was arrested for failure to appear warrants stemming from original offenses of burlgary and minor in consumption of alcohol. Gordon was arrested near the intersection of College and Claflin at about 12:30 Saturday afternoon. His bond was set at $7,376. Glinda Rae Van Kirk, 25, of Ogden was taken into custody by Riley County police for aggravated battery shortly before three Monday morning. The case is described as a possible domestic altercation. For many years, Columbus Day has been utilized as a mandatory training day for Riley County employees. A motivational speaker was featured in the morning, and Commissioner, Ron Wells said, “I agreed with everything he said”. This was Well’s first time attending the training, as he is one of the two new commissioners this year.  He commented, “It’s very informational, and one of the reason’s I’m here is to learn”. The training was held at the Farm Bureau Building, as county offices and courts were closed.  Normal hours will resume Tuesday.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long has been chosen the first chairman of the College Football Selection committee. The announcement was made Monday and the rest of the committee will be announced this week though the names of the 13-member panel already have been reported. Long is one of five current athletic directors, along with West Virginia’s Oliver Luck, Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez, Clemson’s Dan Radakovich and Southern California’s Pat Haden. Kaylee and Lanie Page already have won a 4A state basketball title for Wamego, and now they’ll have a chance to add a state tennis title to their trophy case. The Page sisters are 26-0 this season as a doubles team after winning the regional championship on Saturday over a duo from McPherson, Camry Holle and Emily Ediger, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5). (AP) Jamaal Charles ran for two touchdowns, the Kansas City defense harassed Oakland quarterback Terrelle Pryor into throwing three second-half interceptions and the Chiefs remained unbeaten with a 24-7 victory over the Raiders on Sunday. After winning just twice last season, Kansas City continued the second-best start in franchise history. The Chiefs won their first nine games during the 2003 season. For over 20 years, The Manhattan Fire Department has held its annual open house to coincide with National Fire Prevention Week.  This year’s open house took place Sunday at the Headquarters Fire Station. Family friendly educational activities were offered all day, from noon to 4 p.m., including-fire engine rides on “Old Engine 1”, fire demonstrations, tours, and entertainment from “Frankie” the firefighter.  The fire demonstration allowed large crowds to view a very real fire scenario, and an opportunity to use a real fire hose. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer will be in China next week for the opening of a privately funded trade office tasked with promoting Wichita’s aviation industry. The Wichita Eagle reports the trade office’s mission will be to identify sales and partnering opportunities. The office in Beijing also will work to connect Wichita and China businesses for parts, maintenance and other products and services.

(AP) Last year was rough on lesser prairie chickens, a grouse that’s been a candidate for federal protection for years and is being considered for inclusion under the Endangered Species Act. In 2012, there were about 34,000 lesser prairie chickens across several states. Kansas is home to about half the lesser prairie chickens overall.
