It appears several grant application deadlines are approaching for a few Riley County departments. During Monday’s county commission meeting, the commission viewed the requests and approved them all. Nursing Supervisor, Linda Redding asked that the Healthy Families Grant renewal letter of intent to apply for the grant be signed. This grant money is used for the Riley County Health Department’s family connections home visiting program. A Manhattan woman, who worked in a doctor’s office, was sentenced Monday to two years on federal probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy to unlawfully distribute prescription drugs. Sarah Harding-Huffine (30) pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to unlawfully distribute prescription drugs. In her plea, she admitted that she conspired with co-defendant Dr. Michael P. Schuster while he was doing business as Manhattan Pain and Spine. Although the defendant was not a licensed health care provider and she did not have a drug registration number from the Drug Enforcement Administration, she distributed controlled substances to Schuster’s patients using pre-signed blank prescription pads. It’s been a long time coming, but Excel Road improvements are close to becoming a reality, with County Counselor John Watt making an announcement Monday that the memorandum of understanding for the Excel Road project has been signed by all parties involved. Pottawatomie County Commission Chair Stan Hartwich tells KMAN the heavily used road in southwest Pottawatomie County on the east side of Manhattan has needed work for a number of years. Manhattan Regional Airport recently completed a wildlife fence construction project. This announcement was made in a press release issued Monday morning. The wildlife fence project involved installation of approximately 19,000 feet of eight foot tall perimeter fence. This segment of nearly three miles of fencing is the final installation of fencing that provides a protective barrier around the entire airport. It will ensure that deer, and other large animals, do not stray on airport grounds. The total project cost was $988,886, and was funded on a 90/10 split between the Federal Aviation Administration and the City of Manhattan.
A St. George man died in a dirt bike accident Friday night in Oklahoma. Michael “Mike” Holmes, 34, worked with his father and managed Holmes Carpet cleaning for 16 years. On March first he started the MKCC, LLC carpet cleaning and water restoration business. Holmes was well-known in the St. George and Manhattan area, and was a coach for his children’s sporting teams. He helped with the maintenance of the St.George ball fields. He is survived by his wife Kara of the home and three children. His Parents, Don and Nancy Holmes, live in Manhattan,.
