Shots rang out at Ft. Hood, Texas late Wednesday afternoon, a stark reminder of a similar incident that occurred in 2009 that left 13 people dead. Multiple reports indicate four people are dead including the alleged gunman who has been identified as 34-year old Ivan Lopez who reportedly was a soldier. DETROIT (AP) Under last year’s rules, the Kansas City Royals would have had men on first and third with two out in the 10th inning of a tie game. Instead, their rally ended after a replay review but that was OK with manager Ned Yost. “That’s exactly why the system is there to get the call right,” Yost said. A 43-year-old Kansas Department of Corrections inmate who has been serving time for second degree murder in a Riley County case since 1990 is due for a public comment session and possible parole. John Moss was sentenced in July of 1990 and is currently at the Hutchinson central correctional facility. Public comment sessions are set for Moss’ case and several others May seventh at the Finney State Office Building in Wichita, May 12th at Kansas City’s City Hall, and May 16th at the Municipal Court House in Topeka. Kansas State University students Max Goering, senior in mathematics, McPherson, and Christine Spartz, junior in chemistry, Ellington, Conn., are the university’s newest Barry M. Goldwater scholars. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1986 to honor Sen. Barry M. Goldwater from Arizona, the scholarship is awarded to approximately 300 college students across the country every year. Awardees receive up to $7,500 annually for college-related expenses. With 71 Goldwater scholars to date, Kansas State University ranks first among the nation’s 500 state-supported universities for the most Goldwater scholars. The MHS girls basketball team ran thru the Centennial League at 13-0 and made their second trip to the 6A state touranment in the last three seasons, where they finished 4th. All-league honors were handed out on Tuesday as Scott Mall was named Centennial League coach of the year and Darby Price was named the Centennial league player of the year. Price and Caroline Ballard were both tabbed to the first team, while Par McNair and Savannah Roberts each received honorable mention. Roberts was the only MHS player selected to the All-Centennial League defensive team.

One person was taken to the hospital, two other possible injuries were reported, and an arrest has been made following an accident in Geary county Tuesday night. Elizabeth Ballenger (15) of Junction City was taken to the Geary Community Hospital following the accident in Junction City in the 800 block of East Chestnut. The Wamego City Commission heard from the Library Board Tuesday night. Board Chair Eric Benson gave an overview of the 2013 Annual Report. He said the Board is exceptionally proud that over 44,000 people visited the Library last year, which is 10 times the population of Wamego. Director Leah Kulikowski reported that over 70,000 items were checked out, which does not include digital. All areas of the Library have seen an increase in usage, especially the public computers with free WiFi, plus the youth and adult class participants increased.
