Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 School Board members viewed two options on how to deal with the recent Kansas withholding tax error that impacted 21% of school district employees. The first option was a salary advancement for affected teachers, and the second was a Kansas Tax Penalty Reimbursement. The board unanimously approved both options so impacted teachers could decide on how to proceed with their own situations. Board President, Curt Herrman; Superintendent, Bob Shannon; and Director of Business Services, Lew Faust all apologized for the tax error and said they are working to make sure something like this never happens again. ———-…

Three local USD 383 schools sent out letters to parents Tuesday involving strangers approaching students. Eisenhower Middle School, Lee Elementary, and Northview Elementary have sent letters home to parents after an incident occurred very late Friday night. This is the note parents received: Parents and Guardians, We would like to bring the following incident to your attention. On Friday, February 28 th , an elementary student encountered a stranger in a black car on Walters Drive who beckoned him to the vehicle. Fortunately, the student was a quick thinker and ran home. Ray’s Apple Markets is announcing the closing of its downtown store at 222 North Sixth in Manhattan after eight and a half years. Owners Mike and Nelda Floersch indicate a liquidation of inventory will begin on March 12th and will continue until the inventory is depleted, at which time the store will be closed.   Some employees will be transferred to Ray’s Apple Markets’ west location at 3007 Anderson in Manhattan.   The owners indicate while neighborhood support for the downtown store has been good, it has diminished with changes in Manhattan and where there has been a significant change…

The Manhattan City Commission took action on two items and discussed two others during Tuesday night’s meeting. City Auditor  The Commission began by reviewing  bids for a City Auditor. Of the four bids, Varney and Associates had the lowest at $39,500. Varney and Associates has served as the City’s auditor for the past five years. Kansas law requires Manhattan to undergo an independent audit examination of City finances each fiscal year. Manhattan’s Municipal Audit Committee has been pleased with the quality of work and customer service that Varney and Associates has provided; and after a brief discussion, the Commission unanimously approved…

The Wamego City Commission heard several board annual reviews at Tuesday’s meeting. Joni Chrest, Wamego Housing Authority, went over the annual update of the 32-unit Housing Authority.  She said there are 17 applicants on a waiting list, which will be reduced by one with a recent vacancy.  She added that 2012 Improvement Funds were used to renovate 10 units, with floor to ceiling paint and new carpet.  The Housing Authority also renewed their contract with the Atchison Housing Authority Consortium.  Chrest said this is the second year for the contract, which costs, but cuts down on administrative expenses.
