By Emma Loura Riley County has hired BBN Architects to manage a possible renovation and expansion of county facilities that could include moving some departments into the former First Christian Church building and a purpose-built judicial center. By Cole Bertelsen The Manhattan Area Technical College saw an 11% decrease in state and federal funding starting July 1. “We were reduced about a million dollars out of a $9 million budget,” said James Genandt, the college’s president for the past decade. “That’s a hurt. I had to do a reduction in force with some staff.” Genandt said MATC receives 35-40% of its funding from the state, with the remainder coming from tuition, fees and fundraising. The Manhattan city commission on Tuesday will consider a $5 million project within the Manhattan Business Park. City commissioners will enter into an executive session at the meeting to consider the sale of 8.5 acres, located adjacent to the Manhattan Regional Airport, to Torgeson Electric Company. According to the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce’s Monday Matters newsletter, the real estate transaction is the next step toward Torgeson constructing a new facility in Manhattan. The Riley County Police Department says it’s investigating a Manhattan man on a host of criminal charges. 31-year-old Jesse Brewer was arrested Monday on five total charges including criminal use of a weapon, interference with a law enforcement officer and three Riley County District Court warrants for violating court orders. Authorities are investigating after a woman was struck while riding an electric scooter Monday afternoon, near 6th and Laramie Street. The Riley County Police Department says 36-year-old Ashley Crow was transported by ambulance to Via Christi Hospital. She had only minor injuries. Police say the vehicle fled the area. Mykal Crawley, 33, of Lawrence, was arrested on August 4, 2025, at approximately 10:30 a.m. on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. Officers filed a report for aggravated assault in the 400 block of 3rd Street Friday evening listing a 42-year-old man as the victim. Police have yet to make any arrest in the case.
