TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas State Board of Education members are reviewing a proposed regulation outlining requirements for a new “Celebrate Freedom Week” in public schools. The board scheduled a discussion of a draft version Tuesday afternoon. A new law that took effect in July requires public schools to hold “Celebrate Freedom Week” in kindergarten through eighth grade. It’s designated for the week of Sept. 17, the anniversary of the U.S. Constitution’s signing in 1787. The law says the aim is teaching students about the values upon which the nation was founded. Once again a former Junction City minister accused in several indecent liberties cases is going through the court process. During a status hearing for 26-year-old Jordan Young, Young’s new counsel requested a status hearing in 60 days, with the state opposing the status and requesting a preliminary hearing setting. The court ordered a preliminary hearing for Young on November 7 and 8 with a status check on October 29. Young was appointed a public defender last week after he backed out of a plea bargain involving allegations he sexually abused young boys in his church’s congregation.

A status hearing was held Tuesday afternoon for one of the 17 Manhattan residents arrested on drug charges after the series of 13 search warrants KMAN reported on back in July.  Marvin Berroth II (47) appeared in Riley County District Court, in front of Judge William Malcolm, via webcam from Riley County Jail.  Berroth is currently being held on a $25,000 bond, since it was lowered during his last court appearance.  Berroth faces five drug charges-distribution of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of misdemeanor drug paraphernalia, possession of felony drug paraphermalia and possession of psilocybin mushrooms, and one possession of a firearm charge.  Berroth was charged with all…

A shooting-related death is being reported in Wamego, based on information from Glen Elder Radio Station KDNS, involving a man identified as Kealan German, formerly of Glen Elder. Wamego police indicate there was no crime involving a shooting this past weekend. However police did respond to a shot fired call at 11:40 Saturday night in central Wamego. Investigation revealed a person who had received a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The name of that individual and further details are not being released by Wamego Police. ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles left midway through the Chiefs’ practice Monday with what coach Andy Reid called a strained foot.  X-rays were negative. Charles was participating in an 11-on-11 portion of practice pitting the No. 1 offense against the top defense when he walked off the field and spent a moment speaking with trainers.  He climbed into a cart and was driven up a long hillside to the locker room. The K-State volleyball team is receiving votes in the first American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, released on Monday. The Cats are coming off a 21-win season and their second straight NCAA tournament berth. They picked up the seventh most votes of a team not in the top 25. Defending national champ Texas is the AVCA preseason #1, Iowa State is #15, Kansas checks in at #20, while Oklahoma is also receiving votes, just a few more than the Wildcats. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Wade Davis came off the family emergency leave list and pitched six solid innings, Billy Butler homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Miami Marlins 6-2 on Monday night. The Royals won for the 17th time in 20 games, while the Marlins are 1-8 in their past nine. Davis had not pitched since Aug. 2, returning to Florida to be with his family after the death of his stepbrother on Aug. 3.
