Another status hearing was set for Travis Bowman (22), who was arrested after the armed robbery at Dara’s Convenience Store late last year. The incident happened in November, when Bowman reportedly entered the store and demanded money from the store clerk.  He then presented a weapon, and after obtaining the money, demanded the clerk’s car keys.  According to reports, Bowman then took the clerk’s 1995 Chevrolet pickup, and abandoned it on Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Former Executive Officer with the Flint Hills Area Builders Association, Tracy Shane Roberts (44) appeared in court Tuesday afternoon. Roberts was arrested earlier this month for felony theft, and his bond was set at $60,000. Judge William Malcolm set the preliminary hearing date for February 25th at 3 p.m.  The hearing is expected to last two hours. Defense Attorney, Larry McRell commented on the fact that Roberts is currently living in Wamego and working in Topeka, but also must report to court services in Riley County every week.  McRell asked that this be changed to a monthly occurrence. Unemployment numbers in the Manhattan metro area are up slightly from the month before, according to figures just released by the Kansas Department of Labor. The December 2013 numbers for the Manhattan metro area are 4.4 percent, compared to four percent in November, although lower than the year before’s numbers of 4.7 percent in December of 2012. The metro numbers include Riley, Pottawatomie, and Geary counties. The city of Manhattan by itself had a 3.6 percentage rate, also up a bit from 3.3 in November but lower than last year’s four percent. Area county numbers include Riley with 3.8 percent,…

Update Tuesday noon: As KMAN previously reported, Allegiant Air will no longer be servicing Manhattan Regional Airport after February 23rd. Allegiant Air Spokesperson, Jessica Wheeler commented on the closing Tuesday morning, and said the company was just not seeing a big enough profit or demand for this route. Wheeler adds Allegiant prides itself on being reactive to demand and being reactive goes in both directions, and unfortunately this situation involved a quick cancellation of service. (AP) Parents, doctors and women who have been surrogate mothers are strongly criticizing a Kansas Senate bill to void existing surrogacy contracts and make it illegal to pay women to serve as surrogates. The Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee heard testimony Monday on the measure drafted by committee chairwoman Mary Pilcher-Cook, a Republican from Shawnee. ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) A body found in a pickup truck pulled from the Missouri River has been identified as that of an Atchison man missing since late December. Garry Clyde Sandy (69) had last been seen Dec. 28 at an Atchison convenience store. A statewide Silver Alert was issued for him Jan. 10, a day after co-workers at a Wal-Mart store reported him missing. Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson told the St. Joseph News-Press that someone walking near the downtown of the northeast Kansas community spotted the pickup truck in the river Sunday. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A new report says the Kansas economy continued to improve at the end of 2013 as the state’s unemployment rate dipped below 5 percent for the first time since 2008. The Department of Labor said Monday the seasonally adjusted rate fell to 4.9 percent in December from November’s 5.1 percent. Last month’s figure was also down from 5.5 percent in December 2012. Labor Secretary Lana Gordon says Kansas gained 10,000 non-farm jobs in 2013, the second consecutive year the state added more than 10,000 jobs to payrolls.
