TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Corporation Commission is conducting energy audits at several rural grocery stores to determine how the stores can maximize efficiency. Ryan Freed, director of the KCC’s energy division, says the audit information goes into recommendations about what energy improvements a store can make, and how long it would take them to pay off. Freed told The Topeka Capital-Journal (http://bit.ly/1hbKZAE ) the stores getting the energy audits aren’t required to adopt any of the recommendations. A Manhattan woman was arrested by Riley County Police on Saturday morning for driving under the influence. Carrie McDowell was arrested for DUI, driving without a valid driver’s license, obstruction of the legal process, and other charges. McDowell is being held with a $8,000 bond.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) The Reno County Sheriff’s office says a 77-year-old man was injured when the car he was in was hit by a train. The sheriff’s department says the accident occurred Saturday morning when the SUV drove in front of the Union Pacific train that was traveling about 55 mph. The train hit the car’s driver side rear, causing it to spin off of the tracks. The driver was taken to a Hutchinson hospital with moderate injuries. The sheriff’s department says the train crew wasn’t injured.
DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) Thieves broke into a VFW shed in Dodge City and stole dozens of American flags that fly at a local cemetery to honor veterans. The Dodge City Globe reports (http://bit.ly/1jgp7en ) the flags, which were reported stolen earlier this week, are installed at the Maple Grove Cemetery Avenue of Flags, where each of the flag poles was erected in memory of a veteran.
