By AJ Dome, The Mercury Officials with Riley County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service found signs of tornado damage after severe weather blitzed the Manhattan area in early May. Emergency Management Director Russell Stukey told county commissioners Monday that he activated the outdoor warning sirens in several locations across the county for severe thunderstorms on May 6. Sirens blared shortly after 7:30 p.m. May 6. Tornado warnings were also issued for parts of Clay and Pottawatomie counties on May 6. Researchers at Kansas State University have developed an improved treatment for lung cancer. According to a university release Tuesday, project collaborators recently completed the first procedure in Australia as part of a clinical study. The procedure involves improved bronchoscopic microwave ablation treatment which officials hope could treat small lung tumors. K-State collaborated with Royal Melbourne Hospital, phenoMapper LLC and Australian Healthcare Solutions on the clinical study, which was reportedly “straightforward and required skills that all interventional pulmonologists would possess,” according to Royal Melbourne professor of medicine Daniel Steinfort. Thomas Leggio, 23, of Manhattan, was arrested on June 4, 2024, at approximately 2:31 AM in the 500 block of Rio Hondo Way. Leggio was arrested on probable cause offenses of aggravated assault of an LEO, display of a license plate, failure to yield stop or sign, interference with an LEO, flee or attempt to elude five or more moving violations, flee or attempt to elude LEO by engaging in reckless driving x2, unsafe turning or stopping, and maximum speed limits. Total bond was set at $5,000. Leggio was not confined at the time of this report.

Commissioners on Thursday voted to allow county officials to begin applying for a special use authorization to construct a 300,000-gallon water tower for Riley County Rural Water District #1, covering some 160 square miles of water line from near Ogden north on Wildcat Creek Road to Anderson Ave, then west to Keats and north to the water tower along Tuttle Creek Blvd near the shooting range. A 26-year-old Manhattan man was arrested on a host of drug-related offenses. The Riley County Police Department says Justin Nunez was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on a warrant alleging distribution or possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia, marijuana possession and other charges, for attempting to distribute. Nunez was released from jail after posting a $15,000 bond.
