OLATHE, Kan. (AP) Authorities in a northeast Kansas county are cautioning residents not to be fooled by a scammer posing as a sheriff’s employee demanding money. Investigators say someone has been making calls from what appears to be a non-emergency dispatch number of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. The caller claims to work for the sheriff’s department and tells potential victims they’ll be arrested on a warrant unless they pay him some money immediately. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A federal judge has awarded a couple $202,500 in a dispute over a dam that was once part of Hutchinson’s flood-control program. Jerry and Georgia McGonigle bought a home in 2008 without being told they would be responsible for maintaining the dam. The previous owner had received complaints about the dam’s condition. The Hutchinson News reports couple owned the property before being told about their liability. Bids for repairing the dam were as high as seven figures. After litigation began, the city of Hutchinson abandoned the dam agreement and was not part of the case. The $202,500…

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Arkansas City police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy who was found unresponsive at an apartment over the weekend. The police say in a news release that Manton Kieffer died Sunday at an Arkansas City hospital. When officers and emergency medical personnel arrived at the Garden Walk Apartments, they found neighbors performing CPR on the child. Police say the boy apparently was being cared for by the mother’s boyfriend. The cause of death has not been determined.

DERBY, Kan. (AP) Authorities have identified a man found dead in a backyard pool in south-central Kansas, but they still don’t know the circumstances of the death. The Sedgwick County sheriff’s department said Wednesday the man has been identified as Kyle Phelps, 34, of Derby. Deputies found Phelps floating in the pool behind a Derby-area home Tuesday afternoon after being asked to check on his welfare. The deputies performed CPR until paramedics arrived and pronounced Phelps dead. Sheriff’s Capt. Budget discussions continued at Wednesday night’s special Manhattan Ogden school board meeting as Lew Faust, Director of Business Services, presented four options for consideration. Option one had a mill levy at 52.697, Option 2 was at 52.646, Option 3 was 52.596, and Option 4 was 52.444. Though there was some agreement between board members, a set decision was put on hold as there will be more opportunity for discussion by the board. K-State women’s basketball head coach Deb Patterson announced on Tuesday the non-conference schedule for the 2013-14 season. The Wildcats’ slate includes six opponents who reached a postseason tournament last year.  K-State will host Tennessee State, Charlotte, Wichita State, Grambling State, and UC Santa Barbara.  The Cats will take road trips to UTEP and Hampton, and play in two-game tournaments in both the Bahahmas and San Diego. The Manhattan Manko Senior 17ers are one win away from the state tournament with an 11-0 victory on Tuesday night over the Leavenworth Diamond Jaxx in their zone tournament. Dustan Whipple led Manko with three hits, and Josh Mullin knocked in three runs. Leavenworth was held to just three hits.  The Senior 17ers will face either Atchsion or the Diamond Jaxx in the finals on Wednesday night, and would have to lose twice to not make the state tournament, which will also be in Leavenworth.
