California Public Health officials are investigating a small outbreak of a rare virus that has caused paralysis in some children in the Bay Area.

The Coast Guard reopened the Mississippi River on Monday, two days after an oil spill closed the river between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. About 31,500 gallons of light crude oil spilled into the river after a tank barge hit a towboat.
The first ever Riley County Board of Health meeting was conducted in the county offices Monday evening. The goal of the meeting was to review the 2013 Health Department Annual report, and look at goals for the year. Last week’s Amber Alert involving a Springfield, Missouri girl reminded many of us that such a national emergency notification system exists. Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen and Lt. Josh Kyle updated intergovernmental leaders about how Amber Alert works, with a long list of procedures involved. Kyle adds it isn’t that suprising that it takes a few hours to get such an alert sent out, with having to find out what’s going on and get accurate descriptions, and then notify all the proper authorities, in order to send out the alert. The theft of a horse led to a variety of charges against a Hope, Kansas man Saturday afternoon. Kansas State University Police indicate Monte Johnson, 50, apparently tried to steal a horse during the K-State rodeo this past weekend, but the horse was recovered and Johnson now faces several charges. As previously reported Johnson was taken into custody in the 1400 block of North Manhattan and charged with felony theft, battery, battery against a law enforcement officer, and obstructing legal process. HIs bond was set at six-thousand dollars.
The cleaning and videoing of the University Park sewer lines has been completed, and BG consultants have reviewed the results. Project Manager at BG Consultants, Sam Johnson presented an overview of what they found, during Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting. Johnson said they found 298 broken pipe conditions and 19 holes, among other problems. He estimates 172 feet of sewer main point repairs will need to take place, as well as an additional 2,000 feet of open trench sewer main replacements.
