KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) The National Park Service has added a former elementary school in Kansas City, Kan., that’s long been used as a community center to the National Register of Historic Places. The Kansas State Historical Society says the former Franklin Elementary School building is now one of about 1,300 Kansas sites on the national list of historically significant properties. As the completion date is only a few weeks off, a date has been decided for the open house to allow the public to tour the new Justice Center before the departments make their move. On Saturday, August 10, from 10 am until 2 pm, the building will be opened and guests will get to tour the facility. Riley County department heads raised concerns regarding the new concealed carry bill, that went into effect July 1st, during a previous county commission meeting. Department heads were concerned about concealed carry for their employees, when they are not in county buildings, but are working off grounds. Department heads came to a consensus, during one of their recent department heads meeting, that they want a consistent policy in place for all departments. County Counselor, Clancy Holeman wrote a draft personnel policy amendment prohibiting employee caoncealed carry while on the job. Next week the 38th annual Kaw Valley Rodeo will be making its way to Manhattan next weekend. The event will include the popular bull riding events each night and contests for children including a calf scramble. The rodeo will be open from July 25 through July 27. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A 19-year-old Topeka woman has been charged in the shooting of a 51-year-old Lawrence man. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Douglas County prosecutors on Friday charged Brittny M. Adams with second-degree murder in the death of 51-year-old Gary Edens, who was shot and killed at his home Wednesday. Adams was arrested in Topeka on Wednesday and is being held in the Douglas County jail on $100,000 bond. Jonathan R. Rush, of Wichita, is also charged in the case with aggravated assault, obstruction and criminal possession of a firearm. He’s being held on $75,000 bond. It’s unclear if…
Sunset Cemetery plays host to over 293 deceased Civil War veterans, some of which died in battle, and others that lived on past the war. During Saturday morning’s tour-“The Blue and the Grey: Stories of Civil War Soldiers in Sunset Cemetery”, Riley County Historical Museum Director, Cheryl Collins shared stories of some of those soldiers. Over one hundred and thirty people, all with an interest in sustainability, gathered in the auditorium of Seaton hall on the campus of Kansas State University today to learn about sustainability, as well as to discuss how to move it forward into the future. According to Myles Alexander, who is the Program Coordinator for the Institute of Civil Discourse and Democracy, there are two main topic the event was focusing on.
