TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Defense attorneys have until mid-September to file pretrial motions on behalf of a Manhattan doctor accused of having unlicensed employees write hundreds of prescriptions for powerful painkillers. U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson set the deadline Monday. She previously scheduled a trial for May 2014 for 53-year-old Michael P. Schuster of Manhattan. Robinson plans to have a hearing on pretrial motions Nov. 4. Schuster has pleaded not guilty to four counts involving alleged illegal drug distribution at his Manhattan pain clinic. Besides possible prison time, federal prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of money and property linked to the crimes.…

K-State coach Bruce Weber has once again completed his 2013 recruiting class.  After learning six-foot-11 big man Neville Fincher didn’t qualify academically last month and will attend junior college, the Cats suddenly had one scholarship remaining. Cathedral High School and Compton Magic AAU coach William Middlebrooks confirmed to SportsRadio 1350 KMAN that 6 foot 7 inch, 215-pound small forward Jack Karapetyan of Los Angeles, CA signed with K-State on Sunday night.  He picked the Cats after a visit to Manhattan over the weekend, in favor of his other finalist, Long Beach State. Big 12 freshman of the year Jake Matthys has been named a freshman all-American for the second time.  Baseball America tabbed Matthys to their second team, after he was named a Louisville Slugger freshman all-American by Collegiate Baseball.  The K-State record holder for wins and saves by a freshman, was also named first team all-Big 12, and to the all-Big 12 freshman team.  Matthys is a product of Spring Lake Park, MN., and finished his rookie campaign with a 9-2 record and a stellar 2.05 ERA to go along with nine saves. The first meeting of July has come and gone for the Pottawatomie County Commission and a few items were discussed. To begin their meeting, John Watt, County Counselor, began the discussions on where the county may be going when it comes to Conceal and Carry within county buildings.  At this point, the county has signed the exemption, but by January 1 they will have to have something in place. KanVet will connect veterans with higher education information and job searching tools designed specifically for veterans. The website address is www.KanVet.ks.gov. Riley County EMS responded to a single vehicle roll-over accident on Deep Creek Road at about 6:30 p.m. Monday evening. One of the two people in the vehicle sustained head injuries, and was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Environmental regulators have accused Kansas of polluting water at three road construction sites. The federal government sued the Kansas Department of Transportation on Monday alleging violations of the Clean Water Act over stormwater discharge of pollutants. The sites are located on U.S. 69, U.S. 59 and Kansas 18 near Lawrence, Pleasanton and Manhattan. KDOT spokesman Steve Swartz declined comment, citing the pending litigation. At issue are allegations that KDOT failed to prevent erosion from exposed slopes into waterways. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The chief federal judge for Kansas has set what she considers an aggressive schedule for a lawsuit by Planned Parenthood against parts of a new state abortion law. U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil announced the schedule Monday, as most of the law took effect. It’s designed to allow a hearing July 29 on the merits of Planned Parenthood’s legal challenge. Under her schedule, the parties must finish filing written legal arguments by July 22. Planned Parenthood is challenging provisions that require patients to receive information before their pregnancies about the ability of the fetus to feel pain…
