New signs have been posted on the Riley County buildings, in order to comply with the concealed carry law that went into effect Monday. During the commission’s meeting that day, concealed carry was discussed from the employee standpoint. County Counselor, Clancy Holeman mentioned the commission must make decisions regarding county employee policies. The point of the discussion was to review what kind of authority department heads have over their department employees regarding concealed carry. A man accused of a home invasion which according to police resulted in a Kansas State University student being shot in the upper torso had a pretrial hearing on Monday afternoon in Riley County District Court. Levertis Horne faces multiple charges including aggravated robbery, and aggravated battery. The charges involve an alleged October 2012 home invasion. Authorities say during the incident KSU student Chase Cargile was shot in the upper torso. The hearing was held in closed chambers. Judge John F. Former Manhattan High standout and Illinois State Redbird Jackie Carmichael, who was undrafted in last Thursday’s NBA draft, was picked up by the defending champion Miami Heat’s summer league roster. Carmichael led the Missouri Valley Conference in rebounding and blocked shots last season, he also ranked fourth in scoring with 17.4 points per game. Carmichael scored double figures 29 times and grabbed 10 or more rebounds 16 times throughout the 2012-13 campaign. Manhattan sales tax receipts continue to be down some from the same time last year, but City Financial Director Bernie Hayen indicates the six month point is nothing to be disappointed about. Hayen describes the June numbers released on Monday as lagging just a little compared to the record setting pace of 2012, but points to the $5.1 million collected as still higher than numbers from 2009 through 2011. $5.35 million were collected in sales taxes by this time last year. Make it seven wins in a row for the Junction City Brigade after Saturday night’s 3-1 victory over the Rossville Rattlers. The Brigade are now 13-5, and also beat the North Central Kansas Knights 11-1 on Friday night. The Knights will travel to Rathert Stadium again on Tuesday night. Rain hampered the weekend, but the Manhattan Manko Senior 17ers split a pair of games on Sunday at the Missouri Western State Showcase. K-State football fans who follow recruiting went through a range of emotions over the weekend due to a three-star quarterback prospect. According to GoPowercat.com, six-foot-three-inch 190-pound Aaron Sharp of Humble, Texas had the Cats in his top three, but announced on Friday night he was committing to Utah. After less than 24 hours though, Sharp had a change of heart after consulting with family and ultimately switched his choice to K-State on Saturday morning. With the recent budget decisions at the state level, local universities are seeing a further reduction of funds. For Kansas State University, this is causing some decisions to be made for the future.
