Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation officials on Wednesday announced they will recognize Carl Ice and Mary Ice at their annual spring event on April 11. A murder trial garnering national attention continued Friday in Westmoreland after pausing Tuesday when the defendant’s sisters were involved in a fatal car crash. Dana Chandler is charged with murdering her ex-husband and his fiancée in 2002 in Topeka. This will be the third time Chandler has been tried for the alleged crimes. She was convicted in 2012, her convictions were overturned in 2018, and her second trial ended in a hung jury in 2022. K-State Athletics generates more than $486 million in annual economic activity for the Manhattan community and the state of Kansas according to a economic impact study performed by consulting firm Tripp Umbach and the athletics department. Tripp Umbach, who also recently performed a similar study with the university, utilized data from 2022-23 to conduct the study, which revealed that more than 3,850 jobs resulted from the department’s impact. From a tax perspective, K-State Athletics generated $26.2 million in direct and indirect/induced tax payments for state and local governments in Kansas, with $21.0 million amount specifically benefiting Manhattan. By Emma Loura The Kansas Board of Regents on Wednesday approved the next step in and addition to the Bioprocessing and Industrial Value Added Products Innovation Center at K-State, a project estimated to cost between $26.5 million and $30 million. Regents approved a program statement for the facility, which belongs to the Department of Grain Science and Industry. There, scientists work to develop technology to produce bio-based products from grains and other plants. Officials on Wednesday told the Kansas Board of Regents the university’s first-time freshman retention rate was up to 85.5% as of fall 2023.
