This comes several months after travel reimbursements to Commissioner Dee McKee were in question. County Administrator Chad Kinsley highlighted some key points in the policy for the four new commissioners at last week’s meeting, to ensure everyone clearly understood the policy. As March Madness is in full swing, there were even some talented hoopers in the Little Apple last week. Athletes on teams located around the eastern half of Kansas competed in Special Olympics’ state basketball and cheerleading tournament Friday and Saturday at the Anthony and Eisenhower recreation centers in Manhattan. Manhattan has hosted the tournament since 2023; before that year it was at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka. Friday morning started with teams partaking in individual skill, cheerleading, speed dribble and team skill competitions. Basketball games then got underway shortly after noon. The Riley County Police Department responded to multiple incidents and arrests on March 24, 2025. Akira Cridge, 21, of Topeka, was arrested at approximately 11:39 a.m. on two probation violation warrants. The original charges in the matter were domestic battery and battery on a law enforcement officer. Total bond was set at $8,000. At the time of this report, Cridge was no longer confined. Later that evening, officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 1300 block of Yuma at around 7:13 p.m., where a female was reportedly attempting to strike a male with a vehicle. By Emma Loura Riley County officials approved the Community Corrections Department’s request to apply for Clay County opioid settlement funds on Monday. This funding will assist Community Corrections with the cost of random drug and alcohol testing in Clay County, which it oversees. “In 2021, we started random drug testing and alcohol testing in Clay County so that way, our services were similar in both Clay and Riley County,” Megan Lewis, the Community Corrections director, said. “At the time, we had been a sub-recipient of the Kansas overdose Data to Action grant.” Lewis said the county received a total of…
By Rose Gruenbacher Jacob Thompson, 27, pleaded guilty in February to charges of kidnapping, aggravated battery and sexual battery, all against the same 21-year old woman with whom he shares 2 children. He was arrested for the charges in January 2024 in Junction City. Thompson appeared in person in the custody of Riley County Jail alongside his attorney, Joshua Seiden, to hear his sentencing from Judge Grant Bannister. Bannister ordered he serve consecutive sentences of 8 years 11 months for kidnapping and 2 years 10 months for aggravated battery. Thompson is also ordered to serve a concurrent sentence of one…
Aggieville began its celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with footraces and ended it with a parade, as has been the tradition for decades. Manhattan Running Company and Red Dirt Race Management managed the two competitions on Saturday, which included the Shamrock 2-mile and the Marvin Hachmeister 10K.

Manhattan city commissioners on Tuesday will consider a common consumption area (CCA) ordinance that would allow consumption of alcohol from licensed establishments within a particular boundary. They’re having a special legislative meeting in place of the scheduled work session. The proposal follows a Sept. 24 work session involving city, Aggieville and Downtown business association officials, as well as the Riley County Police Department and Kansas Alcohol Beverage Control.
