A variety of homes were available to tour during this year’s McCain Holiday home tour, including a sorority house and a bed and breakfast. People who attended the event paid $20 in advance, or $25 at the door, to view homes and learn about their history. Police ask that you only report injury or serious vehicle collisions until winter weather clears up. DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) An attempt to thaw a frozen pipe turned into a big problem for a southwest Kansas resident. The Dodge City Daily Globe reports an above-ground water pipe beneath a mobile home froze and broke Thursday afternoon. The resident tried to unfreeze the pipe with a propane burner, but set a fire instead. No one was injured, but firefighters said the flames then spread across the bottom of the home. A structure fire caused severe damage late Friday night. The Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 3144 Ella Lane for a report of a structure fire around 10:45 p.m. Friday. Upon arrival, crews found a two story residential structure with light smoke coming from the rear of the structure. The fire was handled with the initial first alarm response and was contained within 15 minutes. Six fire apparatus and sixteen firefighters repsponded with the las units clearing at around 1 a.m. The house had four occupants at the time of the fire and the residents exited the structure without injury.…
The Manhattan High girls and boys basketball teams both picked up wins to start the 2013-2014 season against Derby. The girls under head coach Scott Mall picked up a hard fought 53-47 victory and the boys game was fast paced but MHS prevailed 80-63 when it was all said and done. “It was a good win, it was a struggle all the way between some missed early shots, foul trouble and sending (Derby) them to the free throw line and that kept them in the ball game,” said MHS girls head coach Scott Mall.
