Three people convicted of crimes in Riley and Geary counties are up for public comment and possible parole in August. Shawn McDiffett, 43, was convicted in 1989 on drug manufacture and possession charges in Riley county. McDiffett also faces other types of charges in Sedgwick, Lyon, and Butler counties. Clifford Burt,41, has been serving time for Geary county convictions in 1991 of arson and attempted first degree murder. He faces similar convictions in Reno County as well as attempting to influence a judicial officer in Ellsworth county. Provost April Mason announced Monday the reappointment of Graduate School Dean Carol Shanklin for another term of five years as the Dean of the Graduate School. Provost Masons describes Dean Shanklin as accessible, responsive and caring in her work on behalf of graduate education over the last five years. On Monday, June 10, a resurfacing project will begin on a 22.52-mile stretch of U.S. 24 in Riley and Pottawatomie Counties. Resurfacing work will take place on the following portions of U.S. 24: from the east U.S. 77 junction east to the K-13 junction (Riley County); from the east Riley County line to Excel Road (Pottawatomie County); and the eastbound lanes only from Excel Road to Wamego (Pottawatomie County). WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A would-be robber wrote a note demanding money at a Wichita restaurant. But he wrote the note on his own check reorder form. Wichita police say the man entered the Spangles restaurant in east Wichita early Saturday. Police Sgt. Scott Brunow told WIBW that the man handed the note demanding money to a cashier. However, he left on foot a short time later after not getting anything. “Water, Water” was the theme of this year’s 25th Annual Garden Tour. Riley County Extension Master Gardener’s hosted the event Sunday afternoon. From 1:00-5:00 p.m., participants had the chance to view five gardens throughout Manhattan. All of the garden’s features waterfalls, ponds, and other water wonders. Master Gardeners were spread out through the five locations to provide additional information. Some of the key concepts for a “water wise” yard include: watering deeply and infrequently, irrigating in the early morning, monitoring the weather and using drip irrigation.
