FORT RILEY, Kan. – A Soldier with Company A, 101st Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, died in a vehicular-related incident Jan. 7 at a Fort Riley motor pool. Spc. Ryan T. Christensen, 29, of Layton, Utah, was a petroleum supply specialist. “Two Families suffered a great loss yesterday – Ryan’s and ours,” Col. John W. Reynolds II, 1st ABCT commander, said. “We continue to provide support to both as we begin to come to terms with this tragedy.” The incident is under investigation.

Wamego’s new year begins with sewer issues. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced Norman Hupe, who told about a sewer backup problem he had on Christmas Eve. Hupe stated he’s lived in the Country Club Addition for more than 30 years and had no problems until the last four years. He said he’s had a backup problem about every year, and the last time the sewer line was cleaned out, it was full of grease. A 25 point fourth quarter pushed the Manhattan High girls past Washburn Rural 57-51 for their first win over the Lady Blues since the 2012 substate final. Caroline Ballard came alive in the second half with 24 of her 26 in the third and fourth quarters to lead the way. INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) A 41-year-old Independence man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of his 35-year-old girlfriend. The Independence Daily Reporter says Russell McQueen Arndt was arrested early Monday in the death of Rebecca Ann Whittley. Montgomery County prosecutor Larry Markle says the stabbing death occurred sometime over the weekend, but Whittley’s body wasn’t found until 2:30 a.m. Monday when officers went to the couple’s home to check on her.
