A 45-year-old man serving time with the Kansas Department of Corrections on three Geary County convictions has apparently been passed over for parole. Ronald Smith was convicted and sentenced in May of 1990 in connection with 1989 cases of rape, aggravated burglary, and aggravated sodomy. Public comment sessions for Smith were held in September, with the parole hearing last month. But a check with the KDOC website indicates Smith’s next possible release date isn’t until October of 2029. He remains incarcerated in El Dorado.

‘Safety Edges’ are used to prevent accidents that are caused by someone losing a vehicle wheel off the edge of the pavement.  Riley County Assistant Engineer, Gary Rosewicz explained how these are used during Thursday’s county commission meeting. The Federal Highway Administration has made these a priority in their safety programs, and they offered to participate in the purchase of these attachments at a 90/10 split.  This would cost the county around $1,000. Eddie Eastes has been named the new Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Manhattan. Ron R. Fehr, City Manager for the City of Manhattan, announced the appointment today. Eastes was selected from an initial pool of more than 55 applicants identified through a national search and chosen from four finalists who went through an extensive interview and assessment process. A public reception was held for members of the community to meet the finalists on November 4, 2013. A former Junction City minister has agreed to more than 24 years in jail on sex-related charges involving young boys in his church’s congregation. Jordan Young (26) appeared Wednesday in Geary County district court for his arraignment before Judge David Platt. According to Assistant Prosecutor Michelle Brown, Young entered into a plea agreement where he entered a plea to one count of Aggravated Criminal Sodomy and four counts of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a child. Young has agreed to a sentence of 294 months with lifetime post release supervision when he is released from the Department of Corrections. He will be required to register as sex…

(AP) Claudio Bieler scored in the 23rd minute of overtime, capping Sporting Kansas City’s 3-1 win over the New England Revolution and giving Sporting K.C. the series victory in the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday night. Defenders Aurelien Collin and Seth Sinovic also scored for Sporting, who will open the conference finals against Houston on Saturday. The K-State volleyball team was poised to take a two sets to one lead on Wednesday night at Texas Tech with a 23-18 advantage, but the Lady Raiders rallied to take control by scoring nine of the final 11 points of the third set.  Tech went on to win the match in four sets over the Cats, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25, and 25-13 at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock.
