WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A memorial service takes place in Wichita to honor Sedgwick County law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The ceremony was scheduled for noon Friday in the City Council chambers at Wichita City Hall. It’s part of an effort by law enforcement agencies across the nation to remember their fallen comrades. Twenty-nine law enforcement officers have died on the job in Sedgwick County since 1871. Brandon Bolden, a guard from Sumter, South Carolina who played last season for Georgetown University has been added to the Kansas State Men’s Basketball program in an announcement made today by Head Coach Bruce Weber. In front of the Riley County Law Enforcement Center on Friday morning, preparations were made for a ceremony to honor officers who now serve and who have lost their lives in the line of duty.In attendance during Friday’s event were not only the officers of the Riley County Police department and it’s staff, but representatives from the Kansas State University Police, Fort Riley, Junction City and others during the ceremony. A Manhattan man has ben sentenced to more than four years with the Kansas Department of corrections for aggravated burglary. Christopher Webber, 30, was remanded to serve 57 months with KDOC during his sentencing Thursday in Pottawatomie county court. Webber entered a plea of no contest in April to aggravated burglary. He had faced several charges in connection with a string of burglaries in Pottawatomie County, and in and around rural Manhattan. Fort Riley began efforts May 13 to capture headstone images and review interment records as part of an Army-wide gravesite accountability initiative to ensure all decedents interred in Army post cemeteries have been identified and are all properly commemorated. A team from Installation Management Command (IMCOM) helped launch the efforts and trained post cemetery staff and augmentees on the accountability process and the use the specialized tools. Unemployment numbers released by the Kansas department of labor show a slight decrease compared to last month. The Manhattan metro area, which is made up of the city of Manhattan, as well as Geary, Pottawatomie, and Riley counties is the lowest in the state and shows a 4.8 percent rate, which is down from 5.8 percent last month and is only slightly higher than the 4.5 percent for April of last year. According to the Kansas Department of Labor the overall labor markets in April showed a pause in the seasonally adjusted job growth. However, considering positive growth recorded in building permits issued and average weekly hours of production workers in manufacturing, it seems that this may be a temporary trend. For the month of April not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined from 5.8 to 5.3 percent, while the smooth seasonally adjusted number saw a slight decline from 5.6 to 5.5 percent.
