   The U.S. Senate on Wednesday evening voted 81-18 Wednesday evening to raise the debt limit put an end to the 16-day Federal Government Shutdown. Kansas’ two U.S. Senators, both Republican voted on opposite sides. Voting to end the shutdown was U.S. Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan. Moran released the following statement shortly after the vote: “I share Kansans’ frustration with Washington’s habit of crisis-to-crisis governing. This latest standoff offered a rare opportunity for Congress and the President to change course, make real reductions in spending, lower federal deficits, and address the unfunded liabilities that threaten U.S. solvency.…

The Junction City Police Department arrested a juvenile suspect Wednesday in connection with a dozen residential burglaries in the south part of the city. Detectives developed a possible suspect on Tuesday. After surveillance was set up, the suspect was observed walking behind a house in the 200 block of South Eisenhower. As Officers approached, the suspect had just gained entry to a residence. After a short foot chase, a seventeen year old male visiting from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida was taken into custody. A search warrant was executed at his temporary residence, and numerous items believed to be stolen were collected.…

ATLANTA (AP)   The Atlanta Hawks, looking for help at small forward, have signed former K-State standout Cartier Martin, who played with the Washington Wizards the last three seasons. The 6-foot-7 Martin played in 41 games, including three starts, with Washington last season. He averaged 6.6 points and 2.4 rebounds. Martin also has played with Charlotte and Golden State in his five-year career. He has played professionally in China, Turkey, Italy and in the NBA Development League. An injury accident was reported in Geary county just before 6 a.m. Tuesday. Richard Marsh of Council Grove was transported to Geary Community hospital following the accident in the 12,700 block of Humboldt Creek Road. A hospital spokeswoman indicated Marsh was in good condition but was being transferred to Stormont Vail in Topeka. The Geary County Sheriff’s department reported deputies responded to the single vehicle rollover accident at 5:54 a.m. Marsh was driving a 1990 Chevy C-1500 when the vehicle went off the left side of the road and overturned. The Manhattan City commission was involved in yet another debate concerning a decidedly divisive topic during Tuesday night’s executive session.
