KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Royals have extended a qualifying offer to right-hander Ervin Santana, which means they would receive a compensatory draft pick if the free agent signs elsewhere. The qualifying offer this year was $14.1 million. Players have until Nov. 11 to accept. The Royals have expressed hope that they can bring back Santana, but he’s coming off a stellar season in which he went 9-10 with a career-best 3.24 ERA. K-State volleyball senior middle blocker Kaitlynn Pelger was tabbed Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. Pelger tied the Big 12 high this season for kills in a three set match with 17 against Oklahoma on Sunday night. The Olathe native also had five digs, four blocks, and two aces. Pelger was named Big 12 player of the Week for the eighth time in her career, which is a K-State record. The Manhattan Parks and Rec Advisory Board held a reception for the final candidates competing for the department’s Director position, Monday evening at City Hall. The four finalists were selected following a nationwide search. An internal interview and extensive interview process was then held all-day Monday. During the reception, each candidate provided brief statements about their personal lives and career aspirations, followed by informal introductions and questions. The Defense Department says a soldier from northeast Kansas has died after his patrol came under fire in Afghanistan. The soldier was identified Monday as Sgt. 1st Class Forrest W. Robertson (35), of Westmoreland. The Pentagon says Robertson’s unit was attacked Sunday by small-arms fire in Afghanistan’s Logar province. Robertson was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Troop of the 6th Squadron, 8th Calvary Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, Ga. As KMAN previously reported, Riley County Noxious Weed Director, Dennis Peterson received the award for Kansas County Official of the Year last week. Commission Chair, Dave Lewis read the nomination letter, the commission sent in, during Monday’s county commission meeting. Peterson said he was “shocked” that he won the award and shared some of his background.  Peterson was vice president of the Kansas Association of Counties Board from 2005-2006, and served as president in 2007.
