A man convicted of first degree murder and other charges in Geary County nearly 40 years ago is up for a public comment session and possible parole. Frank Pencek, 66, was convicted in 1975 in connection with a May 1974 incident involving murder, kidnapping, and rape. Elizabeth Bush, 20, was kidnapped, raped, and killed at Milford Lake. She was studying for a recreation degree at Kansas State and had been working a summer job at Milford Lake. She was stabbed 27 times. WASHINGTON (AP) Police say the U.S. Capitol has been put on a security lockdown amid reports of possible shots fired outside the building. People standing outside the Supreme Court across the street from Congress were hurried into the court building by authorities. In a notice distributed by email, the U.S. Capitol Police advised everyone to “close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows.The notice said gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill. There are unconfirmed reports of an officer injured.

Two Manhattan men have been arrested by Riley County Police on drug-related charges following execution of a search warrant Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4:45 in the 600 block of South Eighth Street . Drugs and paraphernalia were seized. 27-year-olds John Martin and Aswad Bartley were taken into custody for charges which include possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Martin’s bond was set at $25,000, with Bartley’s set at $10,000. What the commission seemed to believe would be a quick refresher, turned into a rather heated discussion, during Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting. Commission Chair, Dave Lewis asked that the shared leave policy for the county be put on the agenda, in order to inform the new commissioners and the department heads of the details within the policy.  Human Resource Manager, Cindy Volanti presented the policy and several department heads were quick to comment. At approximately 10:45 Thursday morning at the intersection of Fort Riley Blvd. and Westwood, Kabita Wosti-Nepal, 34, of Manhattan was driving a 2000 Honda Accord when she failed to yield and struck a 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by Rita McCorkle, 60. Due to this initial collision , a third vehicle, at 2005 Ford Taurus driven by Katrina Cada, 30, also struck McCorkle. Inches matter in sports, and Kansas was able to win the close plays in the Sunflower Showdown on Wednesday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse in a three-set decision over K-State, 31-29, 26-24, and 25-18. (AP) A Wichita businessman is trying to find the owner of a small bag of cremated remains labeled “Grandma.” KAKE-TV reports reports a customer left the bag about two weeks ago at Charlie’s Liquor and Smoke Shop near downtown Wichita. Owner Charlie Nguyen review security tapes but couldn’t identify the customer. This week, he placed an ad on Craigslist hoping to connect with the bag’s owner. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) More than 100 current and former University of Kansas faculty and staff are publicly affirming the free-speech rights of a professor whose Twitter post against the National Rifle Association sparked a political firestorm. The statement issued Wednesday described the tweet by associate professor of journalism David Guth as “intemperate” but said the signers support his right to express his ideas. Retired American Studies Professor Bill Tuttle said the statement is a response to comments from conservative Republican Kansas legislators that Guth should be fired.
