After a winless Big 12 record in their debut a year ago, West Virginia won their second league opener over K-State on Friday night in Morgantown, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22, 25-22. The Cats hit just .077 for the match and were led by 10 kills from Kaitlynn Pelger. Tristan McCarty topped the Cats with 11 digs, while Katie Brand dished out 35 assists. K-State officially dedicated the newly renovated Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex, Friday Afternoon. The project began after a successful student referendum in 2007, and cost 23 million dollars. A variety of K-State leaders were in attendance including, Dean of Students, Pat Bosco; Provost, April Mason; Rec Director, Steve Martini; Current Student Body President, Eli Schooley; and Past Student Body President, Nate Spriggs. A statue titled the “Rec Cat”, located near the south entrance, was also unveiled during Friday’s ceremony.
11 Kansas cities will receive fiscal year 2016 funding for projects that will improve intersections and address road deficiencies, under the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Geometric Improvement program. The state will provide $6.23 million for the Geometric Improvement projects, which will be built at an estimated cost of $7.7 million. The cities will provide matching funds to cover the remainder of the costs. The percent of state funding is based on the size of the city and ranges from 75 percent for the largest cities to 100 percent for the smallest. Rodney McGruder has signed a contract with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, according to the Thunder’s official website. Terms of the deal have not been officially released. McGruder played in the NBA summer league with the Orlando Magic, but was not offered a deal by the team after the summer. He was named first team all-big 12 during his senior season at K-State after averaging 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.26 steals per game. A farm machinery accident has claimed the life of a former Kansas State High School Activities Association official. Rick Bowden died Thursday on his farm near Waverly, Nebraska Bowden spent 18 years as an assistant director for the KSHSAA before retiring in May 2011. Bowden, who also served in the Kansas Legislature from 1985 to 1993, oversaw a number of high school sports including football, wrestling, baseball, softball, and track and field. He’s survived by his wife Sue, two daughters and four grandchildren. Funeral services are pending.
A Junction City man has been arrested on rape and criminal sodomy charges. Hugo Rosales-Leonor was taken into custody by Geary county Sheriff’s Deputies shortly after eight Thursday morning on Franklin Street. No further details were provided, as the investigation continues.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Washburn University is celebrating the 215th birthday of its namesake and mascot Saturday on the Memorial Union lawn. The Topeka school started in 1865 as Lincoln College but changed its name three years later after receiving $25,000 from Ichabod Washburn. He developed a machine and technique that made wire stronger and easier to produce. The company he and his son-in-law ran was the primary domestic producer of piano wire and the crinoline wire used in hoop skirts.
