Former K-State player and assistant coach Brad Underwood is expected to be offically named the next head coach at Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday. A press conference is reportedly set for 2:15pm in Nacogdoches, TX. Underwood has been an assistant under Frank Martin since 2007 and spent the last year on his staff at South Carolina. Underwood has also spent time as an assistant at Western Illinois and as a head coach at Dodge City Community College and Daytona Beach Community College. On the heels of a career-long 4.1 scoreless inning effort Sunday at No. 27 Oklahoma State, Kansas State freshman right-hander Jake Matthys has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. Matthys struck out three, walked none, and gave up just two Cowboy hits as K-State earned a 3-2 win. He picked up his sixth victory of the season, the most by a Wildcat reliever in the Big 12 era. The Pottawatomie County Commission had only a few items to tackle at Monday’s meeting. To begin, Jim Jenkins, assistant director of public works, informed the commission that again an application was made for the Safe Routes to Schools from the Kansas Department of Transportation. Next up was a report concerning the ATA bus by Anne Smith, director. Smith explained during her presentation there has been over 72,000 rides within the last three months.  But, last month alone there was 87 trips in Pottawamotie County. PARTRIDGE, Kan. (AP) Cattle, deer, even the occasional horse are all known to create road hazards in Kansas. But it was a flying turkey that did in one driver’s windshield. The Reno County sheriff’s office says a 65-year-old Larned man suffered minor injuries around 9 a.m. Monday when the big bird crashed through the windshield of his SUV. The turkey landed in the man’s lap, then moved over to the lap of his passenger. KWCH-TV reports the turkey did not survive the crash. SALINA, Kan. (AP) A Salina man has been sentenced to three years of probation for filing false tax returns on his income from a strip club he owned. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Kirk Roberts, 49, must also pay taxes totaling $153,000 under the sentence he received Monday in federal court. Roberts pleaded guilty in January to failing to report nearly $538,000 in cash receipts at his Wild Wild West club from 2006 through 2008. Investigators said the club charged customers a nightly cover charge. It also charged nightly cash fees from dancers for performing onstage or using private rooms.…

SALINA, Kan. (AP) It’s unlikely that a Salina woman will ever top her first trip to the circus. Jenna Krehbiel was attending the Isis Shrine Circus on Saturday at the Salina Bicentennial Centennial Center when she decided she needed a bathroom break. When she walked into the bathroom, she found a tiger standing about 2 feet away. The big cat escaped briefly after performing for the circus. Staff members blocked off all entrances where the public could come into contact with the tiger and it wandered into the bathroom. The Salina Journal reports Krehbiel used a door to the bathroom…

WINFIELD, Kan. (AP) Residents and city officials in Winfield say their town’s children will have another playground. The playground at Island Park was destroyed in an arson fire last month. It was the second time since 2008 that arsonists ruined the playground. Winfield City Manager Warren Porter tells KWCH that the city received an insurance check of $624,000 last week. However, the insurance company won’t give the city replacement coverage again, only liability. Porter says that could change the design of the park.
