A Manhattan man charged with the killing of a Fort Riley soldier, and the shooting of four others was in Riley County Court on Monday morning via video conference from jail. 43-year-old Mathew Wilson is charged with possible first degree murder, four counts of attempted first degree murder, and aggravated burglary. On Monday defense attorney Larry McRell, Riley County prosecutor Barry Wilkerson, and Division I court judge John F. Bosch agreed on setting Wilson’s preliminary trial to May 21st and 22nd. Jared King hit a tie-breaking solo home run to left field in the sixth inning, and K-State salvaged the series with Oklahoma State behind a strong pitching performance from a pair of freshman in a 3-2 victory at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater on Sunday afternoon.  Blake McFadden worked the first four and two thirds innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk, with three strikeouts.  Jake Matthys (6-0) worked four and one third innings of two-hit relief with three strikeouts to win the most games by a reliever at K-State in the Big 12 era.…

The first annual Grow Green match day will kick off on Monday at 7 a.m. at the Colony Square Atrium on 555 Poyntz Avenue.  The event will support 24 local non-profit organizations with matching funds for donors who participate. Manhattan Community Foundation is putting on the event, and CEO Vern Henricks says they’ve received a lot of support for the event from local companies and are looking forward to engage the community to raise funds. It was a celebration at the Sunset Zoo Sunday afternoon as the day before Earth Day coincided with the zoo’s 80th birthday. Many activities were enjoyed by guests such as face painting, live animal encounters with animal roamers walking around the zoo, and a nineteen foot inflatable replica of Earth. Afterwards, the Manhattan High School Drumline lead guests on a parade around the zoo. Cox Communications was a sponsor for the festivities and brought the “Stone Lion Puppet Theatre” from Kansas City who showcased different endangered species and how humans can play a huge part in helping the situation. London Olympics silver medalist and K-State senior Erik Kynard not only won the Mt. Sac Relays on Saturday in Walnut, CA with a leap of 7 feet-8 inches, he also registered the highest mark by anyone else in the world in 2013.  Kynard, 2011 IAAF World Champion Jesse Williams and Canada’s Michael Mason all cleared 7 feet-7 inches, but it was only was Kynard who jumped 7-8.  The Toledo, Ohio native tied his own school record in the process. “Erik jumped well.
