K-State head coach Bruce Weber has his first commitment for the 2014 recruiting class in the form of JUCO big man Stephen Hurt. Hurt is a 6-10, 285 pound power forward from Northwest Florida State College who chose K-State over Wichita State and Miami. Chief Justice Lawton R. Nuss announced today that the Supreme Court has reappointed Judge Meryl D. Wilson to a two-year term as Chief Judge of the 21st Judicial District, effective January 1, 2014.  Judge Wilson has served as a district judge in the 21st Judicial District since April of 1997.  He presides over cases in Clay and Riley Counties. Three Wamego citizens received special recognition by the City Commission. At Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Bob Morse recognized Police Officers Jason Powell, Derek Gray and Dispatcher Sarah Salinas for the August 4th rescue of Kayla Harding after she accidently fell into the Kansas River. After Salinas received the 9-1-1 call from a private citizen, she dispatched the officers, who both arrived at the same time. According to Officer Gray, who went into the water to pull the child to safety, there was already a citizen in the water up to his neck. The rescue ended well and the officers were all…

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP)   Kansas Speedway officials have named Gov. Sam Brownback as the grand marshal for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The Republican governor will preside over the Hollywood Casino 400, which is the fourth race in NASCAR’s top series championship. Matt Kenseth is leading the championship over five-time series winner Jimmy Johnson and Kyle Busch. Johnson won last weekend’s race at Dover, N.H.
