ksda_gov The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) will lead an emergency preparedness exercise October 9-10, 2013, in Manhattan, to practice the state’s response plan to a foreign animal disease. The two-day functional exercise, which will be based out of the Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI) on K-State’s main campus, will enable KDA and its partners in neighboring states, other state agencies, federal and local government, industry and universities to practice the state’s foreign animal disease response plan. More than 200 individuals will participate in the functional exercise, which will be based on the confirmation of foot-and-mouth disease in the United States.…

The Manhattan Fire Department is represented at a rescue conference being held at the Crisis City in Salina this week.  Assistant Chief of Training and Safety Mike Kaus tells KMAN half a dozen folks are attending the sixth annual conference. Kaus adds a variety of areas are covered, with different skills emphasized. One example he provides is searching for people in basements of houses in the case of something like a tornado. 44 premier artists from around the world, some of them from Kansas, submitted paintings and sculptures for the Through Artists’ Eyes exhibit at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. The exhibit marks the first partnership between the Strecker-Nelson Gallery and the discovery center.  Owner of the gallery, Jay Nelson commented, “I represent all of these artists in my commercial gallery, and each one has a very individual vision of the flint hills.  Some of them go out and paint together.  They can stand side by side and paint the same scenery, and you end up with two completely different paintings.” KMAN spoke to…

SEATTLE (AP) Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat Kansas City 4-0 on Tuesday night, putting the Royals’ postseason hopes in serious jeopardy. Mariners rookie left-hander James Paxton (3-0), making just his fourth major league start, worked a career-high seven innings, allowing four hits, walking none and striking out a career-high 10. K-State junior wide receiver Tyler Lockett is one of six players nationally to be added to the 2013 Biletnikoff Award watch list. Lockett ranks 5th nationally in total receiving yards with 469. The junior is coming off a record performance when he set a new K-State single game mark with 237 receiving yards at Texas. Lockett becomes the first Wildcat since 2007 to be up for the Biletnikoff as Jordy Nelson was one of three finalists for the award that season. Former All-American and Wilma Rudolph Student Athlete Achievement Award recipient Devin Dick was granted a 6th year of eligibility this past week by the NCAA. The K-State decathlete will be eligible to compete in both the upcoming indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. Dick, a survivor of testicular cancer, had only used three out of his five eligible seasons due to redshirting in 2009 and then taking the 2011 season off for chemotherapy. The K-State volleyball team came firing out of the gates winning the first two sets, but the under-23 Italian National Team rallied for a five-set victory on Tuesday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse 17-21, 18-21, 21-16, 21-14, and 15-11. The Italians are warming up for the inaugural under-23 FIVB World Championships next month in Tijuana, Mexico.  They’d never played together before the exhibition match against the Wildcats, and it showed. After working for many years to find a way to mitigate flooding problems in the area.. the Manhattan city commission is looking to take another step toward codifying new building requirements during Tuesday night’s work session.   According to city officials a new higher floodplain standard for new construction is being considered that includes plans to curb future flooding by controlling development, and rectifying past building mistakes. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback’s chief spokeswoman says the Kansas Senate’s top Democrat has no grounds to suggest the swearing-in of Brownback’s chief counsel to the Court of Appeals is being delayed for political reasons. Eileen Hawley said Tuesday the suggestion by Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley is unfounded. Hensley questioned having Caleb Stegall take his seat on the Court of Appeals on Jan. 3. The Senate confirmed Stegall’s appointment Sept. 4. Hensley suggested the timing was designed to delay a statewide vote on keeping Stegall on the bench by two years, to November 2016. LOUISVILLE, Kan. (AP) Whoever ransacked a building at a northeast Kansas landfill apparently felt a little remorseful. KCLY-FM reports an employee discovered the burglary at the Pottawatomie County landfill building near Louisville late last week. The sheriff’s office says the burglar caused about $250 in damage to the building and made off with a small amount of cash. The perpetrator also left behind a note of apology. The crime remained unsolved Tuesday.
