TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Parts of Kansas have had a fair amount of rain in recent weeks, but state officials say the persistent drought means it’s still too dry for outdoor burning. The State Fire Marshal and Kansas Interagency Wildfire Council issued a burn advisory Tuesday, citing high winds, low humidity and other factors. State Fire Marshal Doug Jorgensen says residents should plan to delay burning fields and other areas for another year. According to a news release from Alco Stores Inc., the Abilene-based company is moving its corporate headquarters to Coppell, Texas for the purpose of being in a more metropolitan area. In a statement on Wednesday, CEO Rich Wilson said the move to Coppell from Abilene will give the company easy access to many of its stores, other major retailers and transportation for its workers and business partners. Wilson added that relocation to a more accessible location for its vendors is “critical,” and said that Coppell, a suburb of Dallas will help the company attract and keep executive-level personnel. The Manhattan man, arrested after the shooting at Gardenway apartment complex Sunday, made his first appearance Wednesday. Appearing in Riley County District Court, via web cam from Riley County jail, was Matthew Wilson (43). Wilson is charged with six different charges, including one first degree murder charge, four attempted first degree murder charges and aggravated burglary. President Barack Obama sends Congress a budget proposal that includes $714 million for construction of the NBAF facility at Kansas State University. That would be the largest proposed federal expenditure for the project to date. Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas says that the recommendation signals the administration’s support for building the $1.15 billion lab, which will study large animal diseases and develop measures to protect the nation’s food supply. K-State athletic director John Currie has announced a raise and a new five-year contract for K-State men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber. Weber led the Cats to the school’s first conference championship in 36 years in his first season on the bench. He will be paid $1.75 million for the 2013-14 season, a bump of $250,000 from his original deal. Weber’s salary will jump $100,000 in each year of the contract to $2.15 million during the 2017-18 season. The extension was unanimously approved by the K-State Athletics, Inc., Board of Directors. Birgit Wassmuth will be the next director of the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at K-State, and will start her new job in June.
