TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Lawyers for a Topeka man charged in a capital murder case want a judge to dismiss the charge. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Phillip D. Cheatham Jr. was found guilty in 2005 of the slayings of two women and the severe wounding of a third woman in 2003. Those convictions were thrown out this year after the Kansas Supreme Court found Cheatham didn’t have competent counsel. Recent changes within the policies and procedures manual were approved by the commission, and Budget and Finance Officer, Johnette Shepek gave an update to the commission regarding those changes. During Monday’s Pottawatomie County Commission meeting, the commissioners discussed moving forward on the Marlatt Junietta project by looking into additional traffic studies and economic studies. The commission also is needing to discuss the issue with the City of Manhattan and see where they stand. What to with the old courthouse was also brought up again, but as Pat Weixelman, Commission Chair, had previously stated, he wants to know where the courthouse fits in connection with their other projects when it comes to funding. K-State’s November 9th game at Texas Tech will kickoff at 11:00 a.m. on ABC according to the Big 12 conference. It will be the first morning kickoff of the season for K-State. K-State senior safety Ty Zimmerman was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award on Monday, which is given to the top defensive back in college football. Zimmerman joins fellow Big 12 seniors Aaron Colvin of Oklahoma and Jason Verrett of TCU among the nominees. Three accidents were reported in Geary County Sunday, one involving a fatality. A 35-year-old Manhattan woman identified as Dale Colleen Williams, died in an accident on I-70, eight miles south of Manhattan, at about 8:45 Sunday evening. The Kansas Highway patrol reports a 1998 Ford Taurus driven by Randy Jost, 57, of Ottawa was westbound on I-70, when the vehicle struck a disabled vehicle in the lane of travel.
