The Manhattan Regional Airport is getting the go ahead nod from the Manhattan city commission to keep their airtraffic control towers operational after funds are cut from the contractors on May 5th. City officials approved city staff to enter negotiations with Midwest Air Traffic Control to keep the control tower open until September 13th of 2013. Commissioner Jim Sherow says the tower is vital for ensuring continued growth of the airport, and believes the tower is essential for drawing in a new airline. Senior outfielder Tanner Witt set a new career high with five hits including his first home run in three years along with a double, and finished the game on the mound in a 9-1 victory over Nebraska on Tuesday night at Tointon Family Stadium. K-State senior guard Brittany Chambers has been tabbed an honorable mention all-American by the Associated Press. She’s the first all-American at K-State since 2009, and the sixth all-time. She joins the likes of Shalee Lehning, Kimberly Dietz, Kendra Wecker, Nicole Ohlde, and Andria Jones. Chambers is the only player in Big 12 history to score 750 or more points (762; 21.2 ppg), grab 250 or more rebounds (271; 7.5 rpg) and dish out 100 or more assists (118; 3.3 apg) in a single season. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A candidate for the Wichita City Council says his home and vehicle were vandalized this week. His opponent says he is not to blame and is condemning the vandals. Josh Blick says he and his wife found spray paint on his yard signs, his home’s front door and front window Monday, and the front windshield of his car was smashed in. The vandals also spray-painted the name “Jeff” on the home. Blick is running against Jeff Blubaugh for the southwest Wichita council seat. Former Rock Creek standout Lizz Herrs claimed three state titles and two Kansas Relays titles during her high school career.  She had the fifth longest javelin throw in the country during her senior year as a Mustang, and is now making similar marks at the University of Oklahoma. Herrs leads the entire NCAA as a freshman with a throw of 173 feet, nine inches on Saturday at the Razorback Spring Invitational in Fayetteville, AR.  With her performance, Herrs also now owns the third-best throw in program history at Oklahoma.

GRANTVILLE, Kan. (AP) A Kansas couple wants to know why someone shot and killed their daughter’s 11-year-old horse. Gary and Ara Carbonneau are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest in the shooting of the chestnut filly named Aimee. WIBW reports the couple’s insurance company added another $1,000 to the reward fund. The couple says someone trespassed on their property last Tuesday and shot the horse at point-blank range. Topeka veterinarian Ed Kester says the bullet passed through the horse’s liver and stomach before lodging in her intestine. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
