MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a year that saw K-State reach unprecedented athletic, academic, administrative and fundraising success, John Currie was presented the 2013 Bobby Dodd AD of the Year Award at the annual Division 1A Athletics Director meetings in Dallas. The honor, which coincides with head coach Bill Snyder being named the 2012 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year, comes on the heels of Currie being named a 2013 FBS UnderArmour AD of the Year this past summer. K-State head coach Bruce Weber has his first commitment for the 2014 recruiting class in the form of JUCO big man Stephen Hurt. Hurt is a 6-10, 285 pound power forward from Northwest Florida State College who chose K-State over Wichita State and Miami. Chief Justice Lawton R. Nuss announced today that the Supreme Court has reappointed Judge Meryl D. Wilson to a two-year term as Chief Judge of the 21st Judicial District, effective January 1, 2014.  Judge Wilson has served as a district judge in the 21st Judicial District since April of 1997.  He presides over cases in Clay and Riley Counties. Three Wamego citizens received special recognition by the City Commission. At Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Bob Morse recognized Police Officers Jason Powell, Derek Gray and Dispatcher Sarah Salinas for the August 4th rescue of Kayla Harding after she accidently fell into the Kansas River. After Salinas received the 9-1-1 call from a private citizen, she dispatched the officers, who both arrived at the same time. According to Officer Gray, who went into the water to pull the child to safety, there was already a citizen in the water up to his neck. The rescue ended well and the officers were all…

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP)   Kansas Speedway officials have named Gov. Sam Brownback as the grand marshal for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The Republican governor will preside over the Hollywood Casino 400, which is the fourth race in NASCAR’s top series championship. Matt Kenseth is leading the championship over five-time series winner Jimmy Johnson and Kyle Busch. Johnson won last weekend’s race at Dover, N.H. Fort Riley civilian employees received notices of furlough Tuesday, following a government shutdown effective 12:01 a.m. Eastern Oct. 1. Furloughs will affect hundreds of civilian workers across a broad spectrum of services at Fort Riley. Effects of the shutdown will vary across the post. “Annual funding for the federal government expired on September 30, 2013,” Fort Riley Garrison Commander Col. The Manhattan Municipal court system has initiated its first step in aquiring a new software system officials say will streamline operations, and could provide a direct link to local law enforcement agencies. City Attorney Bill Raymond presented the first reading of an ordinance to the city commission on Tuesday night to recommend the new system from Tyler Technologies.  The cost for the system was quoted as being $83,533 for the first year, and then$40,232 a year for upkeep and service fees.
