Yet another DUI saturation patrol is planned Friday by the Riley County Police Department. Officers involved in the Saturation Patrol will be looking for signs of impaired driving and other traffic violations. Motorists who show signs of alcohol and/or drug consumption will be evaluated and appropriate enforcement action will be taken. The purpose of this program is to place additional officers in and around the Manhattan area with the goal of detecting and deterring impaired driving. The Riley County Police Department has launched a new website! RCPD Public Information Officer Matthew Droge announced the new website Thursday morning. He describes the site as “a hub of information intended to better communicate information and ideas to the public.” In addition to already established Facebook and Twitter accounts, Droge says the police department now has several avenues to inform the public of everything from road closurers and current crime trends to community relations events and spotlights on employees who make the community a better place to live. August 19th, Community Corrections Director, Shelly Williams was made aware of the fact that the Secretary of Corrections is planning to give one to two million dollars to benefit behavioral services.  Williams, and her staff, managed to send in a proposal for a portion or the funding, which would go toward a care coordinator position at the department. During Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting, Williams explained the position, which would not only benefit corrections.  The care coordinator would be assigned to “high need” patients that receive treatment from both corrections and Pawnee Mental Health Services. Riley County Police have determined a report last month of a battery in the south central portion of Manhattan was false. RCPD had reported a battery during the early morning hours of August 18th, involving an alleged female victim jogging alone. At the time police said the reported victim was able to escape from an uknown male subject with minor injury. But a news release from the RCPD Investigations Division Thursday indicates new information has led them to determine the report to police was false. Riley County Police are investigating a reported rape, with a information filed Wednesday in connection with an incident several months ago in the city limits of Manhattan. The suspect in the case is known to the victim and is not tied directly to other recent investigations. Public Information Officer Matt Droge indicates the alleged victim is a 20-year-old woman who attended a house party in June, where she met with the suspect.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Kendrys Morales hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Morales hit his 18th home run to straight away center on a 1-2 pitch from Aaron Crow with Franklin Gutierrez, who had walked, aboard. The Royals used eight pitchers, tying a club record for a nine-inning game. Lucas Luetge worked two perfect innings to earn the victory. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs had offensive tackle Eric Fisher rated #1 on their draft board. The Jacksonville Jaguars had fellow offensive tackle Luke Joeckel at the top of their list. Both of the teams got what they wanted in April as Fisher went #1 overall and Joeckel #2 in the NFL Draft. Kansas State senior safety Ty Zimmerman is one of 30 players nationally to be named a candidate for the Senior Class Award. As part of Wednesday night’s Manhattan Ogden school board meeting, the topics for the Fall retreat were decided. The board agreed upon examining both the Manhattan High School East project and the College Hill Facility project. Curt Herrman, Board President, also mentioned there may be a topic to tackle in the spring, but they’ll come to that later if needed. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Senate has sent Gov. Sam Brownback a bill revising a state law allowing 50-year sentences in certain murder cases to fix a constitutional flaw. The legislation requires juries rather than judges to decide if the facts of a case warrant a sentence of 50 years without parole. Wednesday’s 40-0 Senate came one day after the House approved the measure 122-0.
