WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A Wichita committee formed to review grant requests has rescheduled a public hearing that was postponed by a winter storm. The meeting is now set for March 5 at Wichita City Hall. Presentations are expected by agencies submitting proposals for Community Development Block Grant funds. Those funds are used to support recreation and crime prevention services for youth, shelter for domestic violence victims and new housing development services. RUSSELL, Kan. (AP) A new police chief has been named for the central Kansas city of Russell. The Hays Daily News reports that Dale Weimaster will serve as police chief for the city of about 4,500 people. He replaces Jon Quinday, who had served as police chief until he was named interim city manager. Quinday has since become city manager. Weimaster is a lifelong Russell resident. He joined the Police Department as a patrolman in 1994 and was named captain in 2009. He’s expected to be sworn in Friday.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita tourism officials predict the city will see a $14 million economic benefit from hosting a national women’s bowling tournament six years from now. City officials announced Wednesday the 2019 United States Bowling Congress women’s tournament will be held at two local bowling alleys Northrock Lanes and Thunderbird Bowl. The Wichita Eagle reports the event is expected to bring several thousand bowlers to the city during the tournament’s run from April to June 2019. The news of Riley County’s Health Department Director, Susie Kufahl’s, resignation came as a unexpected shock earlier this week.  The process to fill her position is in the early stages. Human Resource Manager, Cindy Volanti came before the Riley County commission, during their Thursday meeting, to address the first step of the process-advertising.  The job has been listed on the county website thus far, and the commission recommended putting it on additional websites, including Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Works and Kansas Association of Counties (KAC). Organizers with the Homecare and Hospice Foundation say it is their biggest fund raiser of the year, and will feature a weekend of wine tasting events starting on Friday March 8th at the Manhattan Country club at 6:30pm. A construction accident in a private residence has resulted in an individual being lifestarred to the University of Kansas Hospital, with what is described as a significant extremity injury. Larry  Couchman, Director of Emergency and EMS Services for Mercy Regional Health Center, indicates his crews responded to the accident, at 125 Fourwinds Court a little before nine Thursday morning. While the name of the individual has not been released, Couchman confirmed an ambulance took the individual to Mercy, with the patient stablized before being lifestarred to Kansas City.

The FAA is considering closing the Manhattan Regional Airport’s control tower due to sequestration. In a list released by the FAA several airports with contracted control personnel would be closed to bridge a budgeting gap put in place by sequestration. Airport director Peter Van Kuren says he’s disappointed the FAA would take such a measure, but is confident the airport will continue to run smoothly even in its absence. Currently pilots at the airport do similar approaches without the control tower into and out of airports during the evening hours at the Manhattan Regional Airport.
