An Manhattan-based accountant has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for embezzling from a commercial construction company where he worked, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today. He was ordered to pay more than $640,000 in restitution according to a press released from Grissom’s office. 64-year old Larry D. Lord of Manhattan of pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of filing a false tax return. The Manhattan/Ogden teachers officially have an agreement. A special USD 383 board meeting was held Monday morning and board members unanimously approved the contract seven to zero. As previously announced, teachers this past Friday ratified the tentative agreement reached last month. The new contract includes a 2.5 percent compensation package increase, with an increase of 750 dollars in base salary. Other provisions include continued coverage of the basic health insurance premium and an increase of 1.5 percent supplemental contract compensation for coaches and sponsors.
Olsson and Associates have prepared preliminary designs for the McDowell Creek road construction project, which has yet to be approved by Riley County Commissioners. Olsson and Associates Representative, Mark Bachamp was present at Monday’s commission meeting to share some changes recently made, such as cost estimates and speed limits. Further additions and options could be discussed in the future, if the project is approved, including bike lanes. The cost to add those bike lanes would be up around $200,000 according to Bachamp. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff Office is investigating a stabbing reported to have occurred at Pottawatomie County State Lake # 2 on State Lake Road on Sunday morning, around 2 a.m. Deputies responded to the report of a person being stabbed at the lake. The victim, a 23-year-old man from Manhattan was later located at Mercy Regional Health center, being treated for a non life threatening injury. Four victims of the August 10th stabbing incident in Junction city have now been named by Junction City police. 21-year-old Colin McCarty, of Arizona, is listed in stable condition in Stormont Vail in Topeka. 22-year-old Erick Rollins, of Fort Riley, is in stable condition in Stormont Vail. 28-year-old Andrew Trammel, of St. Louis, was treated and released from Geary County Community Hospital. 25-year-old Priscilla Mora, of Junction City, was treated and released from Geary County Community Hospital. An Ogden man was arraigned on charges related to a death of a 6-month-old child in Riley County court on Monday morning. Micheal Dechant is facing charges of first degree murder, and child abuse. Dechant plead not guilty to both charges. According to authorities in March of this year Dechant shook 6-month-old Dominick Lubrano, his girlfriend’s child, which resulted in serious head injuries and death. Dechant’s trial is set to start on December 6th, and last through the 13th in Riley County Division III court.
Another structure fire was reported in Wamego this weekend causing a total loss to the home and contents. The fire occurred on the 300 block of Maple Street within the Mobile Villa mobile home park Sunday afternoon. Responders arrived within several minutes after receiving a call from another resident and were able to get the fire under control. No one was in the home at the time of the fire except for a pet, which had died.
