Former Manhattan High standout and Illinois State Redbird Jackie Carmichael, who was undrafted in last Thursday’s NBA draft, was picked up by the defending champion Miami Heat’s summer league roster. Carmichael led the Missouri Valley Conference  in rebounding and blocked shots last season, he also ranked fourth in scoring with 17.4 points per game. Carmichael scored double figures 29 times and grabbed 10 or more rebounds 16 times throughout the 2012-13 campaign. Manhattan sales tax receipts continue to be down some from the same time last year, but  City Financial Director Bernie Hayen indicates the six month point is nothing to be disappointed about. Hayen describes the June numbers released on Monday as lagging just a little compared to the record setting pace of 2012, but points to the $5.1 million collected as still higher than numbers from 2009 through 2011.  $5.35 million  were collected in sales taxes by this time last year. Make it seven wins in a row for the Junction City Brigade after Saturday night’s 3-1 victory over the Rossville Rattlers.  The Brigade are now 13-5, and also beat the North Central Kansas Knights 11-1 on Friday night.  The Knights will travel to Rathert Stadium again on Tuesday night. Rain hampered the weekend, but the Manhattan Manko Senior 17ers split a pair of games on Sunday at the Missouri Western State Showcase.  Manko lost 5-4 to the Midwest Black Sox, but edged Next Level Baseball 2-1.

K-State football fans who follow recruiting went through a range of emotions over the weekend due to a three-star quarterback prospect. According to GoPowercat.com, six-foot-three-inch 190-pound Aaron Sharp of Humble, Texas had the Cats in his top three, but announced on Friday night he was committing to Utah. After less than 24 hours though, Sharp had a change of heart after consulting with family and ultimately switched his choice to K-State on Saturday morning. This year’s Country Stampede has come to a close and though Mother Nature made an appearance on Thursday, the rest of the weekend presented concert goers and those working the event with a pretty decent forecast. Sheriff Greg Riat, with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department, and Larry Couchman, Riley County EMS Director, both credited the weather with their low numbers. With the recent budget decisions at the state level, local universities are seeing a further reduction of funds. For Kansas State University, this is causing some decisions to be made for the future. Dr. Kirk Schulz, president at K-State, talked in a recent interview of the possibilities to come, some of which will lead to a reduction of the school. PARTRIDGE, Kan. (AP) Multiple grass fires have closed a road near the south-central Kansas town of Partridge. The fires were burning Saturday between Partridge and Abbyville. The Hutchinson News reports that some of the fires have threatened homes, but no structures have burned. No one is injured.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) When a Topeka woman went into labor three months early, her mother was there to deliver the baby. Dorothy Robinson, 42, admits that she thought little of it when her 19-year-old daughter, La’Trese Robinson, complained of pain Thursday morning. After all, she was just 28 weeks along. But The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that everything changed when La’Trese Robinson’s water broke. Dorothy Robinson called 911, and a dispatcher walked her through the delivery while an ambulance rushed to the family’s home. La’Trese Robinson was released from the hospital Saturday.
