Rodney McGruder has joined exclusive company at K-State as he was named as one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year Award. McGruder joins Michael Beasley (2008) and Jacob Pullen (2010) as one of only three Wildcats to be included in the top 30 for the award. Three other players from the Big 12 are on the 2013 list, Ben McLemore and Jeff Withey of Kansas, and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State. Brittany Chambers broke her career high with 36 points, but unfortunately it was not enough as K-State fell 66-57 to West Virginia on Tuesday night at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. A mobilization farewell ceremony is planned for the U.S. Army Reserve’s 538th Transportation Detachment, Movement control Teams this coming weekend. The event will be at the VFW on South Fourth Street in Manhattan Sunday afternoon at two. The unit is supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and will provide theater transportation by providing support operations and in-transit visibility of personnel and cargo. The teams mobilized to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008.
A probation violation landed a Manhattan man with a large bond. Richard Jones (39) was arrested around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. Jones violated his probation on a Geary County warrant and his bond was set at $5,000. —— Numerous items were damaged in a man’s home Tuesday afternoon. Around 1:30 p.m., a criminal damage to property incident was reported to have happened on the 400 block of 12th Street in Ogden. Daniel Hogan, a candidate for Manhattan City Commission, will withdraw from four upcoming candidate forums due to a family matter. He will be spending time with his wife, and his newborn daughter who is currently in a neonatal intensive care unit in Topeka. The Manhattan Parks and Recreation department may get a new home. Tuesday night’s Manhattan city commission working session covered the possible consolidation, or renovation of several facilities including the parks and recreation Manhattan offices. Assistant City Manager Jason Hilgers says the current offices weren’t meant for long term use as they were built in the 1980’s as a supposed temporary measure. Bruce McMillan architects presented several different options including renovating the old structure, and consolidating several outlying facilities into a new City Hall renovation.
