LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Lawrence police say they arrested a 31-year-old man after two connected and strange crimes. Sgt. Trent McKinley says the caper began Sunday evening when someone entered a mobile home in Lawrence and made off with a Japanese-style sword, a blind black cat and some Chinese meditation balls, among other things. Police were called later when residents at a nearby home reported they fled when a man barged in with no shirt or shoes but wearing the sword on his waist and carrying the cat and meditation balls. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A south-central Kansas sheriff is warning potential lawbreakers that his jail is so full they will find themselves with a blanket on a cold hard floor if they get arrested. Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson posted on his department’s Facebook page the weather was preventing inmates from being transferred to jails in other counties. The Hutchinson News reports about one-fourth of the county’s inmates are housed elsewhere at a cost of $35 per day because of limited capacity at the Reno County facility. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Department of Transportation says all highways that were closed by snow and ice have reopened. But a couple of crossings at the Oklahoma border in southwest Kansas remained blocked late Tuesday afternoon while crews in the neighboring state made the roads passable. Those closing affected U.S. 83 and Kansas 23, while U.S. 183 and 283 were open into Oklahoma. Southbound lanes on several highways connecting southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle were shut down Tuesday as heavy snow blanketed the region. What started as a criminal damage to property led to two arrests for first degree murder and arson. Those individuals arrested made an appearance in court Tuesday for their preliminary hearing statuses. As KMAN previously reported, a structure fire occured at 820 Sunset Avenue around 11:45 p.m. February 6th. The fire took the life of Vasanta Pallem, 34, and the two arrests were made in conjunction with this case. Patrick Scahill (20), of Manhattan, was arrested for first degree felony murder and aggravated arson. He is held on a $1,000,000 bond. “A little disappointing” is the way Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen describes the lastest sales tax numbers, released Tuesday morning. $887,230 were collected in the February numbers, which actually reflect two months prior, or December of 2012. The adjusted rate is $819,068, which is down about $26,644 from the same time last year. On a more positive note, grocery sales were up more than 13 percent compared to a year ago.
