TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback has reappointed a retired Washburn University professor as chairman of the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission. Daniel Harden has served on the commission since 2011, and Brownback appointed him Wednesday to another two-year term. The commission enforces the state’s lobbying, campaign finance and conflict-of-interest laws. Harden is a Meriden resident who taught at Washburn in Topeka for more than two decades, starting in 1987. CHANUTE, Kan. (AP) Authorities in southeast Kansas are seeking help identifying a body found at the site of a fire in Chanute. The fire broke out last week in a residential area of the city. The Chanute Police Department was summoned back to the scene Wednesday to investigate the possible discovery of a body. Police say the person’s identity is unknown and the body will be transported for autopsy. The state fire marshal’s office is helping determine the cause of the fire.

2,023 individuals submitted electronic surveys regarding the addition of a indoor/outdoor fieldhouse facility here in Manhattan. Out of the surveys collected, 1217 surveys came from Manhattan, 249 from Wamego and 61 from Junction City.  690 additional comments were also submitted to provide extra feedback, 474 of which provided email addresses so they could stay up to date on this project. A group of five players that played a vital role in K-State’s Big 12 championship season will get their chance to impress NFL scouts at the annual scouting combine later this month in Indianapolis.  Arthur Brown, Anthony Cantele, Chris Harper, Collin Klein and Braden Wilson all will be poked and prodded at the event that showcases players’ physical and mental tools.  For six days at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis beginning February 23rd, players are put through a series of drills, tests and interviews with more than 600 NFL personnel including head coaches, general managers and scouts. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)   Garlon Green scored 20 points and TCU held on for a 62-55 upset of fifth-ranked Kansas on Wednesday night for the Horned Frogs’ first Big 12 victory. The Jayhawks (19-3, 7-2 Big 12), coming off a loss four days earlier against Oklahoma State, have their first losing streak in more than seven years. A fire reported late Wednesday night claimed the life of a K-State postgraduate student. The Manhattan  Fire Department responded to an apartment fire at 820 Sunset and found smoke coming from the address. Upon entering the residence, firefighters found 34 year-old Vasanta Lakshmi Pallem unconscious. She was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center where she passed away from smoke inhalation. Pallem worked in the chemical engineering department at Kansas State. No one else was injured in the fire. There were reports of individuals jumping from the apartment complex balcony, but upon arrival, emergency responders did not find anyone on the balcony. …
